    Figure 1. Image comes from three descriptions of the beginning:

    From the 'Babylonian Story of Creation', written before 2300 BCE: …The fall of the celestial being that appears to correspond to Satan of the Bible. In his ambition, he raises his hand against the god of heaven. He is represented riding in a chariot through celestial space, surrounded by the storms, with the lightning playing before him, and wielding a thunderbolt as a weapon. This rebellion leads to a war in heaven;

    From Revelation 4, written before 450 CE: …Out of the throne proceeded lightning and thunder: and there were seven lamps of fire burning before the throne, 6 And before the throne there was a sea of glass like unto crystal: and in the midst of the throne, and round about the throne, were four beasts full of eyes before and behind. 7 And the first beast was like a lion, and the second beast like a calf, and the third beast had a face as a man, and the fourth beast was like a flying eagle. 8  …And they rest not day or night;

    From Revelation 12:7-9: And there was war in heaven: Michael …fought against…the great red dragon Satan, which was cast out of heaven, into the Earth, and his angels were cast out with him.

Images created from early sixteenth century woodcut modified to include image of Comet Shoemaker-Levy 9, which crashed into Jupiter. Image taken by Hubble Space Telescope, July 1993. The images of the lion, calf, man and eagle are modified from early sixteenth century woodcut of zodiac signs from Wikimedia. The image of Satan riding a winged chariot, making war on heaven with lightning bolt is from an Athenian vase showing Helios, god of the Sun, 5th BCE. British Museum. The image of lightning bolt, clouds and rainbow around the throne of heaven (Sun) are original art by Richard Hayes.

    Introduction: Making Sense of the Logic of the Story of Creation.

    From the Author:

    For much of my life I have had questions reconciling the story of creation as told to us in the Book of 'Genesis' in the English language King James Bible and the history which was taught to us through the education system based on science. When I read the first chapters of the Book of 'Genesis', I found the stories to be lacking when I applied the scientific method to the events of creation as described in chapters 1 and 2. Why, would God need to make light and darkness? - Then make the objects that light comes from: the Sun and the stars. Why would God initially make the Earth void and imperfect? - Then begin to create. The events seem out of order.

    I tried to work with the English language version of the Book of 'Genesis' to make sense of the logic of the order of creation, but it did not seem logical. But, with continued education, I began to understand that I needed to go to the source of the stories in order to understand the meaning of the original words as written in Hebrew as the English words did not ring true. But, not knowing what the original writer intended to say, makes it very difficult to translate the Hebrew words into English. There can be many possibilities as to the meaning of the Hebrew words. In order to translate the Hebrew words into English, I had to think about what the words could say, then form the bases for an alternate story of creation as told to us in chapter 1 of the Book of 'Genesis', then prove that the alternate words, indeed, ring true, i.e. match the known events and physical laws.

    The resources used to translate the Biblical Hebrew words into English include:

    1.     'The Hebrew – Greek Key Study Bible': with a dictionary of the words in the Hebrew Bible by James Strong, with an associated word number for each Hebrew, Chaldee, or Greek word defining multiple meanings of each word in the old and new testament.

    2.     'The Interpreter's Bible', a 12-volume reference on the sources of, and meaning of each phrase of the King James Bible.

    3.     'The Pentateuch and Haftorahs', a parallel modern Hebrew and English Book of the five Books of Moses and other Laws with commentary.

    4.     'The Polyglot Bible', which displays the King James Version of the English words with each associated Strong's number along with the text of the Greek Septuagint, Hebrew Tanakh, and Latin Vulgate in parallel.

    From these references and Internet sources, I learned that the name for the Book of 'Genesis' is from the Ancient Greek LXX (Γένεσις - Genesis), meaning "birth, origin"; where as the Hebrew name is  (בראשית - B'reishit) (Biblical: ראשית - Be're'shiyth), meaning "beginning. Structurally, the Book of 'Genesis' consists of the primeval history (chapters 1–11) and cycles of Patriarchal stories (chapters 12–50) - Abraham, Isaac, Jacob (renamed, Israel), and concluding with Joseph. While some traditions contained in the Book of 'Genesis' are as old as the monarchy, its final shape and message come only from the Exilic and Persian periods (6th and 5th centuries BCE).1a From the late 19th century CE, there was a great deal of consensus among scholars around the documentary hypothesis", which speculates that the five Books of Moses were compiled into it's present form, ca. 450 BCE, by combining four originally independent sources, known as the Jahwist, or J (written about 1050 - 900 BCE),
