Dedicated to John and Gretchen Stevens
Prologue: The HydroStar Reactor
It was December 31st, 2092. The day it all started.
Mason Stevens was the founder, CEO, and chief scientist at SolarTech industries. He was among the richest men in the world. He was also the man who had created the HydroStar reactor. And, when the clock struck twelve, the reactor would be turned on.
Mason Stevens was at his facility in London, where the reactor stood in the center, its freshly polished metal exterior gleaming in the moonlight.
Thousands of people were crowded outside of the laboratory facility, waiting to watch the reactor go online. Dozens of local as well as global news crews were right outside the chain metal fence towering above them all. Some paparazzi even tried to climb the fence, learning the hard way that it was electrified. Yet, nobody thought to ask why the fence needed to be electrified in the first place.
Minutes later, Mason Stevens emerged from deep inside of the lab. As soon as he came out, the crowd of reporters huddled around him, thrusting cameras and microphones in front of his face.
Mason hated journalists. They were always pestering him, asking questions he didn’t want to answer. But no, he had to answer. If he didn’t, people would start to wonder why. And Mason couldn’t have that. Especially tonight. So the scientist sucked it up, smiled at the crowd, and answered the barrage of questions flung at him from the press.
Mr. Stevens, how does the reactor operate?
asked one woman, holding the microphone up to Mason’s mouth.
Well, that’s a great question, lady,
Mason said with excitement, "I sent one of my unmanned drones years ago from my space program in San Antonio. The drone actually traveled at almost ten times the speed of light, to another solar system! A solar system that's star was corrupting. The drone was able to absorb the core of the star, which is quite awesome because the core of this star burnt at almost 53 thousand degrees celsius,, making it almost impossible to transport without burning through the drone. But we did it! Yes, it was I who was able to! Anyways, it uses hydrogen to create fusion. The core is inside the HydroStar reactor, the man paused to gesture at the mammoth of a machine through one of the many circular windows showing off the reactor.
We have special tubes that are extremely durable and are able to absorb the core’s rays!" Mason smiled a broad smile to his guests, causing many girls to giggle quietly amongst themselves.
The billionaire was quite short, with dark skin and blond dyed hair. He was originally from South Africa, and spoke with a heavy accent. He was quite young, thirty years old at the most. When he moved to the U.K, he changed his name to Stevens to fit in. It wasn’t too different from his original name although it was spelled Mason Uyaba. And for some reason, women found him extremely attractive.
The questions kept coming.
Mr. Stevens, if this uses fusion, isn’t it the same as a nuclear reactor?
asked one man, once again pushing the microphone up to the scientist’s mouth.
Mason Stevens replied with another in depth, informative answer. Well, in a way, I suppose you could say that. But this reactor is much, much more powerful than the nuke. In fact, I’d say it makes the old nuke look like a triple A battery! Just ONE HydroStar reactor can provide average electricity to 35% of the globe! And of course, we have more than just one! With this new power, we will be able to make so many more scientific discoveries!
Visitors kept oohing and ahing each time he answered a question, though most of them didn't know what half of what he was saying meant.
It was just ten o’ clock. In two hours, the machine that would change the world would be activated.
People kept coming in through the gates. Many people didn’t believe in Stevens, and thought he was a fool. Many of these people were rich and powerful enough to hire assassins to go after him without getting caught. And they also had the will to do it. Mason knew this, so he had armed guards positioned at all the main entrances to the property. There were people that would check automobiles before they were allowed to enter, an x-ray machine at the entrance to the courtyard they were standing in, and guards at the front door to the lab.
Mason gazed briefly at the people entering. He noticed a man with a white beard wearing a baseball cap and sunglasses. Why would he need sunglasses, when it was nighttime, and the moonlight seemed to have vanished behind the mountains in the distance?
Mason kept on with his routine. Smiling. Waving. And occasionally answering a question.
Smile. Wave. Question.
Smile. Wave. Question.
He checked his watch. One hour until the activation. The attendance kept growing by the minute. Many influential figures were among Mason’s guests, as well as a good handful of world political leaders including the North-Eurasian Prime Minister, the president of the United American Union, The Chairman of the Latino-American Republic, and even the Pope. Mason didn't really care that they would all die. In Mason’s mind, that was better for him.
The short man that he had noticed before came
