    Even when the same behavior happens, in the same way, with regularity, it can continue to cause fresh anguish to a young child’s mind.

    Poppy was entertaining herself on the living room floor, while her mom was busy in the house, and her dad and Kail (her much older brother) were busy talking over their work plans. On this pleasant weekend day, her dad was called to work again. She heard him, from the other room, taking out his suitcase. He walked into the living room to pack up and leave. Though this was a common occurrence, it upset Poppy afresh. She ran up to her bustling father and hugged his waist. You’re not going again, Papa!? It’s the weekend!

    He was going again, and Kail would be leaving shortly after him. Their dad was a higher-up in the local government of their small metropolis, which was the only real urban area around for quite a distance. Kail was a rising force in local government, following in his father’s footsteps. Lately, things had been weird in the city, and consequently in the government. Everyone who was at all important in city government had been working long hours and had been called in often. Poppy didn’t know what was happening, but she could sense that the grown-ups were behaving differently. Everyone’s parents were tense, not just hers. There
