Chapter One
The sleek lines of Veracruz International Airport were starting to feel like another world as the rickety bus lurched and growled its way down the gravel road, its suspension squealing ominously with each bump and pothole. Andrew James Calloway – Andy to his limited selection of friends – had felt almost at home in the airport. Sure, it was a long way from home, but there had been signs in English and floors so shiny they reflected the LED lights in the ceiling. But the further this bus traveled, the more the landscape had changed, leaving behind the cluttered city for a world that looked as though time had passed it by. The bus was the most modern thing in sight, which was saying something, considering that it was probably decades older than Andy.
The bus driver hauled on the wheel, prompting the ancient vehicle to moan its way around yet another sharp bend in the road. Branches whipped against one side of the bus; Andy's window offered a heart-stopping glimpse of a drop down into a lush jungle, thick and green and sweltering. The bus's front wheel dived down into a pothole, prompting a scatter of angry Spanish from the other passengers and a yelp from Andy.
Sitting beside him, Nathan seemed totally at ease. He laughed. You're not in Canada anymore, Dorothy.

said Andy, smoothing down his shirt, noting the dark V on the front where his sweat had soaked through. He grinned. This is so exciting.
Well... sure,
said Nathan, leaning back in his seat. Andy tried not to envy the ease with which his friend seemed to be absorbing each wild toss and turn of their ride. "I'm not sure that sitting in a bus that's about to fall apart, heading towards the middle of nowhere, really qualifies as exciting. Where are we even going to stay out here?"
I told you, the villagers are making room for us in their homes,
said Andy. It's going to be a chance to see the real Mexico – not just the touristy side!
Nathan shrugged. I like the touristy side.
It'll be fun, Nate,
said Andy. You'll see.
Yeeeah, once again, bro,
said Nathan, draping a kindly arm over Andy's shoulders, "I'm not sure you understand the meaning of the word. When you invited me to
