    CHAPTER ONE

    U

pon retrospect, I should have realized that the smell of candle wax and birthday cake was the first sign that something very bad was about to happen. If I had known then what I know now, perhaps I could have saved us all a lot of heartache and trauma. At the very least, I would have saved us some time, but my boss, Rubberman, always says that hindsight is 20/20. Even so, I couldn’t help but feel slightly responsible for what happened after I smelled the cake.

Let me back up. I’m Alex Fry, but I’m better known as Beams, the sidekick of the superhero Rubberman. It’s a decent gig because even though I’m paid barely more than minimum wage, I got a cut of the licensing deals we make with merchandise companies, which turns out to be a lot because Rubberman is very business savvy. Granted, most of it has to go to my college fund, but I still earn more money than most kids my age working minimum wage, so I can’t complain.

But being a sidekick is not as easy as it looks. For one, it’s illegal to tell anyone your secret identity, so I have to keep my mouth shut whenever I hear people talking about how awesome Beams is. Only a handful of people know my real identity, which is part of the reason I didn’t act when I should have.

That isn’t nearly as bad, however, as when you find yourself face to face with the worst humanity has to offer. I’ve faced everything from petty purse thieves to powerful supervillains who could turn you into a living ice sculpture just by thinking about it. Now that I thought about it, it was pretty amazing I’d survived as long as I had. Guess I’m tougher—or luckier—than I thought.

Yet even that isn’t the real problem. The real problem—and part of why the situation got so bad—was that you were basically on duty all the time. Sure, I got days off and vacation like anyone, but sometimes, trouble would find you even if you didn’t go looking for it. Especially if you don’t go looking for it. And I seem to have a knack for attracting trouble.

Trouble found me on a school field trip in the middle of April. My History class went on a field trip to the Golden City Museum. I’d been to the place a few times, once with my parents when I was younger and
