Caina slowed her horse’s pace as the afternoon gave way to dusk over the Imperial Highway.

It had been a splendid day, clear and sunny, warm but not humid, but the weather along the Bay of Empire was often pleasant. To Caina’s left, she saw the rippling mass of the Bay of Empire, the sea a dark blue in the fading sunlight. To the right, she saw the rolling hills and grasslands that marked this portion of Nighmaria, the ancient heartland of the Empire.
