About this ebook

“The concept is original and the execution brilliant. This is Dr Seuss meets Shakespeare, with all the joy of the former meshed with all the intrigue of the latter.” — David Crystal, author of Shakespeare’s Words and How Language Works
The Silly Shakespeare for Students edition of Shakespeare’s Pericles simplifies Shakespeare’s play without dumbing it down. Author Dr. Paul Leonard Murray, director of the Belgrade English Language Theater, has cut the play down to an hour or so and made the language more accessible. And a play like Pericles practically demands an irreverent attitude. This version makes fun of the original and lends itself to an over-the-top, clownish style à la commedia dell’arte! Put the yay back into Traged-yay with this silly, but oh-so-fun version of a Shakespeare classic that he probably didn’t even write! Written for students, but any lover of Shakespeare will enjoy how Dr. Murray weaves the original plot and language into this new, laugh-out-loud version!
Pericles, Prince of Tyre, is considered one of Shakespeare’s worst plays and certainly one of the weirdest. Pericles sails the Mediterranean searching for a wife. On the way he encounters incestuous kings, bawdy fisherwomen, an assassin, and mad kings and queens. His wife apparently dies at sea, his daughter is almost killed by her adopted parents, then rescued by pirates and sold into prostitution, where she talks the governor of the island into marrying her! Happy endings for everyone!
Production notes and a summary of the play make putting on Shakespeare easy and fun, even if you’ve never done drama in class before! Looking for something different for drama club, student theater, or speaking class? Want to spice up your literature or reading class and give students a new appreciation for Shakespeare? This version of Pericles for students is for you.

Paul Leonard Murray

Paul Leonard Murray has worked as an actor and educator for over 30 years. He graduated in Theatre, gained an MA in Educational Theatre and a PhD in Applied Theatre. Originally from England but now living and working in Belgrade, Serbia, Paul is a passionate believer in the power of theatre to engage, educate and amuse children of all ages.He is currently the director of Belgrade English Language Theatre which is a youth theatre for young people for whom English is not their native tongue. The plays in the Silly Shakespeare for Students series were developed with the help of his youth theatre members and can be read in class or performed. Inspired by the humour of the Goons, Monty Python and Commedia dell Arte (and of course the Bard himself) Paul hopes that these adaptations can help to inspire further appreciation of theatre, the English language, Shakespeare and silliness.

    SUMMARY

THE ORIGINAL VERSION of Pericles is generally regarded as being one of Shakespeare’s weakest plays: indeed it was not included in the First Folio of his work as it was thought to be substandard. In his own day however the play was one of his most popular in theatres, presumably because there is so much action and so many opportunities for the dramatic.

PERICLES, THE PRINCE of Tyre is in search of a wife. Following a visit to Princess A, our hero flees the island of Antioch because he discovers that Antiochus, the King of the island, is having an incestuous affair with his daughter. Pericles goes back to Tyre, but Antiochus sends an assassin to kill him. On the advice of his Lords, Pericles leaves Tyre in the care of his counsellor, Helicanus and travels to Tarsus where his food supplies help Governor Cleon and his wife Dionyza prevent a famine. News reaches Pericles that an assassin is on his trail and so he sets sail once again, this time to Pentapolis, however, en route his ship is wrecked and he is the only survivor.

After being discovered by some fishermen, Pericles wins a jousting tournament where the prize is Thaisa, the beautiful daughter of King Simonides. They fall in love and Pericles marries her. After so much time away from home Pericles decides to return home. Thaisa is pregnant now, and on the way to Tyre a storm at sea brings about the birth of her child, whom Pericles calls Marina. Thaisa apparently dies in childbirth. The grieving Pericles seals her in a watertight coffin, puts a note inside, and throws the coffin in the sea.

The coffin floats and finally ends up on a beach in Ephesus. The local doctor/mystic Cerimon revives Thaisa. She mistakenly believes that Pericles has been lost at sea and is offered sanctuary in the Temple of Diana. In the meantime, Pericles has visited Tarsus and left Marina and her nanny Lychorida with Cleon and Dionyza who have agreed to raise her with their own daughter Philotene.

There is a sixteen-year gap in the action. Marina’s nanny Lychorida has been killed by jealous daughter Philotene and Marina is now a beautiful young woman. Dionyza is also jealous of her and makes up her mind to have her killed. She instructs a servant/therapist Leonine to kill her but before she can Marina is captured by pirates. The servant escapes the pirates by hiding. After the kidnapping, Leonine tells Dionyza that she’s
