Parmi tous les problèmes soumis à mon ami M. Sherlock Holmes pendant les années de notre intimité, deux seulement lui furent signalés par moi : celui qui avait trait au pouce de M. Hatherley, et celui de la folie du colonel Warburton. Le dernier est sans doute le plus intéressant pour un esprit aussi observateur que le sien ; toutefois l’autre est si étrange dans son début, si dramatique dans ses détails, qu’il vaut la peine d’être raconté, quoique mon ami n’ait pas eu l’occasion d’y employer toutes ses merveilleuses facultés d’analyse. L’histoire a été reproduite plus d’une fois dans les journaux ; mais, comme toujours, un simple entrefilet frappe moins le lecteur, que la série des faits se développant sous ses yeux et dévoilant peu à peu le mystère qui les enveloppe. Les détails de cette affaire firent alors une profonde impression sur moi et deux ans écoulés depuis n’en ont guère diminué l’effet.
C’était pendant l’été de 1889, peu de temps après mon mariage. J’étais revenu à ma clientèle civile, et j’avais finalement quitté Holmes qui demeurait toujours dans Baker Street, où j’allais souvent le voir ; j’avais même réussi à lui faire perdre un peu de ses habitudes de bohème, au point qu’il venait parfois chez nous. Ma clientèle s’était constamment accrue et comme je demeurais près de la gare de Paddington, j’avais quelques clients parmi les employés du chemin de fer. L’un de ceux-ci, que j’avais guéri d’une longue et douloureuse maladie, ne se lassait pas de chanter mes louanges et cherchait à m’envoyer tous les malades sur lesquels il
