By the zebra crossing, Maria happened to cross the street just as the pedestrian light turned red. She was deep in thought, and a sexual fantasy was occupying her mind involving her and three older guys, making her oblivious to anything going on around her. When she heard a car revving and a persistent car horn, she turned intuitively and spotted Jenny running towards her, eyes like saucers and a stupid grin on her face. She had run out in the street after Maria, of course.

Maria! Her mum shouted at her. Maria sighed when she saw her mother's angry eyes. The cars drove fast past them. Maria remained there and waited dejectedly, while her younger sister trotted around and looked at the clouds above. When the light turned green, her mum crossed the street too. Her bulky frame waddled forward and the tight grip of her handbag made her knuckles white.

"Maria! Now you just wait, young lady. Why do you always have to be in such a rush?! Why can't you walk with us?" She paused to catch her breath, but it was evident she had more to get off her chest.

Because you walk so slowly, said Maria.

"You can't just think about yourself. Do you realise how close it was for Jenny to have been run over? Lethal, absolutely lethal. Your sister could have died. She could've died!"

Maria rolled her eyes.

"No, you watch it, young lady! You will do as I say! You will walk right here next to us, and then you stop and wait by the zebra crossing! I will not stand by and watch my own child get run over. Can you not see that you make me absolutely terrified?"

"But surely it's not my fault that she runs out into the street. Hello?"

Oh yes, it is. You have a responsibility towards your little sister. She does exactly what you do because she admires and looks up to you, don't you get it?

She's fifteen, for Christ's sake. Does she not have a brain of her own, or what?
