About this ebook

Since its immediate success in 1813, Pride and Prejudice has remained one of the most popular novels in the English language. Jane Austen called this brilliant work "her own darling child" and its vivacious heroine, Elizabeth Bennet, "as delightful a creature as ever appeared in print." The romantic clash between the opinionated Elizabeth and her proud beau, Mr. Darcy, is a splendid performance of civilized sparring. And Jane Austen's radiant wit sparkles as her characters dance a delicate quadrille of flirtation and intrigue, making this book the most superb comedy of manners of Regency England.

Among the writers who have approached nearest to the manner of the great master, we have no hesitation in placing Jane Austen. —Thomas Macaulay
'Pride and Prejudice' is the best novel in the language. —Anthony Trollope
I used to think that men did everything better than women, but that was before I read Jane Austen. I don't think any man ever wrote better than Jane Austen. —Rex Stout
Elizabeth Bennet has but to speak, and I am at her knees. —Robert Louis Stevenson
Read again, and for the third time at least, Miss Austen's very finely written novel of 'Pride and Prejudice.' That young lady has a talent for describing the involvements and feelings and characters of ordinary life which is to me the most wonderful I ever met with. —Sir Walter Scott

Jane Austen

Jane Austen (1775-1817) was an English novelist whose works are among the most popular novels ever written. Her keen eye for social tension, and ear for taut, witty dialogue have delighted readers for centuries, while her novels have maintained historical importance through their analysis of the dependence of women on marriage to gain social standing and security. She has been widely adapted for both stage and screen, and continues to be among the most widely-read of late-18th-/early 19th-century writers.

Another disappointment. Don't get me wrong, it's a great story. In fact, it's one of my favorite love stories. However, all the romance happened IN the dialogue when I personally prefer the unspoken gestures.

I try to write a review of each book I read or reread since joining LT. But, really, what can I say that hasn't already been said somewhere else about this book? You either like Austen or you don't and nothing I say will make a difference.Flo Gibson is an excellent reader, by the way.

It's a classic, but they are a bit hard to read because of the different style of writing back then and the word choices. This, of course, is still a good book. Not my usual page-turner choices, but a good book to read to see where things came from and to glimpse the time period--a romance and a statement of how things were.

As a French major in college, I never got around to reading many of the English or American classics. Audiobooks are providing a way to go back and catch up on titles I never read.Thoroughly enjoyable story about Lizzie and her four sisters whose main purpose in life is to find a suitable husband. While set during the early 1800s, the themes of the story stand up over time and the character of Lizzie is superb. I really enjoyed this book and look forward to listening to other titles by Austen.

    Where do I begin?
I first read this amazing book in high school. I so fell in love with Jane Austen that I proceded to read all of her books that I could get my hands on.
I should probably read it once a year.
Jane Austen is a true inspiration.

Obviously the language is dated and heavy on narrative. Structurally, it's an excellent example of a 3-act play with multiple plot lines and surprising twists.

If you haven't watched the movie yet I strictly recommend you read this book first, because it is more entertaining than the movie! Genius observer, this auther Jane Austen!Obviously, it was not easy to marry for love AND for fortune. The mother of the five sisters uses all kinds of tricky words to convince them to marry someone rich. But the girls have their own philosophy - unusual for that time! Very vivid, humorous conversation.

Although I definitely found this rather tedious at times, there is no doubt that this is a good book and deserves to be a classic. The characters are wonderfully developed and the scenery is perfect, but I just could not get into the bourgeois society's ideologies.

I gave a 3 due to the story cause it was just a simple love story set among rich people blah blah blah; I’ve been recently watching Downton Abbey set 100 years later and not much has changed; the writing itself however is excellent in itself; it would be awesome to see modern story writers use language so effectively like Austen, Shelly, Hugo, or Wells.

As expected, back for more Austen, and once again I wasn't disappointed. Her writing is so vastly different from much of the rest of what's being produced during this period, it makes for remarkably diverting reading. Great fun, and I'm glad I was able to easily snag a full set, so I can dip in and out whenever I like now.

I absolutely adore Pride and Prejudice. Probably the easiest to read out of all the classics because the language is very accessible. Lizzie is one of the strongest characters I've ever come across, and I love the transformation of Mr. Darcy throughout the book.

Still my absolute favorite. As cliche as that might be. I used to reread this annually but these days I just don't have the time. Still, I find new layers on each reading. I think the letter from Darcy to Elizabeth, where he defends himself against her accusations, is one of my favorite sections is all of literature. And I still reread that, even when I don't have time for the entire book. This is my pretty hardcover version. But I think I might have about five copies total at this point.

After hearing that this book was great, and feeling behind, I decided to check it out. I liked it, but still think it overrated. Some parts I found funny, but for the most part it was just annoying how the littlest things were thought to be such a big deal (ie being introducted to somebody). I did, however, find the relationship between Mr. Darcy and Elizabeth quite charming. A lot of the characters annoyed me, but it was in a 'love to hate' way.

Hands down, the single finest novel ever written and, also hands down, my personal favorite. All things are delicious here, but the relationship between Elizabeth and her father especially so. When discussing the lamentable Mr. Collins, Elizabeth reads out loud to her father his presumptuous and ludicrous letter. Elizabeth pauses and asks her father, "Do you think him a fool?" "I hope so," my dear, "and have great anticipation of his company." It does not get better.

Oh Pride and Prejudice. I was shocked when my favorite (male) college professor opined that it is the best novel ever written in the English language, but now I'm close to agreeing. Nearly every woman I know, and many of the men, have a "thing" for Fitzwilliam "Mr." Darcy. I'm not quite sure why that is, but I am not immune.

I fell in love with this book immediately. It was my first Austen, and really my first introduction to this type of novel. How could I have waited so long?! Beautifully written and captivating, I couldn't put it down. Elizabeth's and Mr. Darcy's relationship is so true-to-life that anyone can relate to it. This book made me fall in love not only with the characters, but with the time period. I look forward to many future re-readings!

Pride and Prejudice the best known of Austen's novels details the antics of the Bennett sisters and their quest for love and security. Their mother is anxious to see them married to suitable partners and works tirelessly to this end. Their are some really humorous characters and scenes in this book as well as some passionate and tragic scenes. Austen delves into the many emotions that accompany human interactions in the 19th century.
