JOGGING IN RED SWEATS across the university’s Library Mall, he unclipped his beeper from his belt and stared at a phone number he didn’t recognize. But the message could have only come from his brother. Call now. NOW,
it read. Arnold was expected to meet Eddie’s demands. Most people did.
Where are you?
Arnold typed, his thumbs colliding.
NOW!
was the reply.
His office at a distance, Arnold found a payphone off the mall. He wiped the perspiration from his forehead with his wrist.
Go to Milwaukee,
Eddie said with urgency. You gotta go now.
Eddie—
Jump and go. Call me from County Stadium.
Arnold was in Madison, two hours away. He had intended to complete his run, then prepare for tomorrow morning’s lecture. Go and do what?
A little wind kicked up off Lake Mendota, perhaps a harbinger of September rain.
Arnie, for Christ’s sake, will ya?
And do what?
Arnold repeated.
Just show up, put on the uniform, just be, you know, me.
