About this ebook

From the Characters of the What Do You series comes a standalone short story about hope, happiness, and love

Austin

I like to tag and run.

But lately, all my friends are finding love.

And I keep running, wondering if I ever will.

Then fall came, and I see my finish line.

But this time, I want to run in circles and make it last.

At least long enough for a next time.

Terra

I like to meet and leave.

Not worried about finding love.

Instead, I run away because love is a fool's word for deceit.

But I never expected him.

And this time, I don't think I will be able to walk away from the promise of a next time––with him.

    Happy Birthday Niks!

    Chapter One

With my laptop and books jammed inside my messenger bag, I slung the strap over my shoulder and headed toward the exit of the cafe. The smell of coffee beans, sweet pastries, and warmth were soon replaced by the chilling breeze of Indiana’s fall temperatures.

My muscles ached with each step I took, reminding me how much yesterday’s track and field practice kicked my ass. I’d thought I would have been in better shape—hell, all I did was run. But with the sudden change of weather, it took time to get used to the cool autumn air filling my lungs.

I pushed the café door open, but the fall’s wind pushed it quicker and farther than I’d anticipated. Quickly, I tried to catch the door; instead, someone else did.

    Fuck.

It was such a filthy word to come out of those bow shaped lips, but when I noticed her right hand rubbing her shoulder, I understood the reason.

The door swung back my way, but I swiftly moved out of its path before it shut behind me. Sorry, I should’ve had a stronger grip on the handle. Are you alright? My hand reached out for her without a thought, and her lashes lowered to my hand as it cradled her elbow. When her eyes looked up to me, I was gifted the softest grey. Austin, I uttered as her glimmering gaze seized my body from moving.

Austin? Her brow furrowed as she tucked a wind-blown strand of blonde hair behind her ear, and I let my hand fall away from her arm.

My name, I stated with a grin. Her brow quirked, and a ghost of a smile hid behind her features. You know, this would be the perfect time to say yours, I joked.

Her smile was contagious, just like the way I couldn’t stop looking into her silvery eyes.

Why would I? she sassed. I mean, I did just get hit by a door because of you. White teeth peeked through her red stained lips, and her features were delicate around her diamond shaped face.

Correction, the wind, I debated, raising my palms between us. Her small chuckles made it impossible to play it cool, to play my usual game of tag and run with a girl. Instead, here I stood, smiling like a fool, watching the
