    Oracle Exalytics Revealed

Oracle Exalytics In-Memory Machine is an engineered system from Oracle Corporation that combines high-performance hardware, and optimized versions of their business intelligence products, to create an integrated environment for analysis and data visualization. Aimed at organizations who wish to analyze large amounts of data with split-second response times using rich, visual dashboards, Exalytics complements other engineered systems such as Oracle Exadata or can be installed standalone, connecting to your existing business intelligence data sources.

In this book we will take an in-depth look at Oracle Exalytics In-Memory Machine, starting with an overview of the product then moving on to installation, configuration, and then creation of the in-memory adaptive data mart that powers its speed-of-thought dashboards. This book is aimed at existing users of Oracle Business Intelligence who are familiar with the 11g release of the product, and have either purchased, or are considering purchasing, an Oracle Exalytics In-Memory Machine server. It is based on an expanded and updated version of the Oracle Exalytics chapter in the Oracle Press book Oracle Business Intelligence 11g Developers Guide written in the first half of 2012, but extended to cover more administration and development topics based on our experiences running an Oracle Exalytics Server out of our offices in Brighton, UK, in 2012.

Thanks are due to Mike Durran (Principal Product Manager, Oracle Corporation) and Robin Moffatt (Principal Consultant and Trainer, Rittman Mead) for their technical editing and input during the writing of this book. Robin has been the systems administrator for our Exalytics server and contributed much of the content on administration and management of the Exalytics hardware, while Mike has been an invaluable resource in his role as Oracle PM responsible for the infrastructure and lifecycle elements of the whole Exalytics product.

The content and examples in this book are based on the updated, Release 1 Patchset 1 (1.0.0.1) version of Oracle Exalytics In-Memory Machine that became available in August 2012, which updated the Oracle Business Intelligence software that comes as part of Exalytics to the 11.1.1.6.2 BP1 release. Of course, by the time you read this book, further versions of these products may have been released, but most of the examples and guidelines should still hold true.

Let’s start off then by taking a look at what Oracle Exalytics In-Memory Machine is; how it relates to Oracle’s other business intelligence, data warehouse, and performance management products; and
