About this ebook

It's not only in the air, but in the water. Perhaps also in the last free-range telephone booth in north America, installed surreptitiously in the middle of the night. In these tightly-woven postcards, nanotales and hastily-passed love notes, we are wended patiently through a crowded party where every room hums with shimmering paper lanterns in full WhisperSurround. Featuring the glittering scales of underwater mermen, explosive rose petals, fairy tale pop-up boutiques and potentially stolen real-Swiss chocolate, this collection is sure to satisfy any sudden sweet craving.

Author

Brian S. Parrish

Author Brian Parrish is an awed believer in the power of story and a regular patron of the dreaming. However, he's best known as a virtual stunt pilot, human cannonball coach, Indianapolis slot car racer and tender tiger tamer—in a parallel universe, that is, where his Elkhart Blue 1967 Chevrolet Camaro RS has been impounded for extraordinary parking fee accumulation. In this one, he scribbles the odd story and subscribes to the International Psychic Cat Network. He lives in the rolling red hills of Virginia with an ambling caravan of family, friends and familiars.

And lo there came unto them a merman, glittering of scale and eyes heavy with desire. And She laid aside his trident, and put away her crown, and they held hands in the foaming waters ‘til sunset took the light from earth and sky

    The Flash

Sometimes a life finds itself in desperate need of an interruption. For me, it was like drowning in a bottle of cologne, smothered by the color red.

I was there on the roof when the sirens went off, when they fell silent, and I listened to mothers crying along with their wailing infants in the sudden hush.

The hoarsely choked words of lovers saying goodbye to one another so clearly many stories below, that I later chalked up to lack of sleep and a drug-addled mind.

The missile impact was seen by few, but recorded on instruments all over the world. The flash that followed was forever inscribed on the backs of my retinas, and I see it still whenever I close my eyes. And then the mushrooming cloud of carmine, rose petals all, nearly choking us.

They would disappear before the cleaning crews could be organized, and any volunteers saved for the occasion, in the freezer, folded hastily in a book, or held gingerly in still shaking palms, vanished the next day like
