The New Boo - Autumn Palen
The New Boo
Mrs. Ellington stepped softly through her classroom, conscious of the clack her shoes were known to make against the linoleum floors. She had heard someone down the hall, and although she wasn’t sure who it was, she was sure she didn’t want to run into them. Spending eight hours a day explaining the Iliad to high schoolers was a thorough drain on the social battery, and although she prided herself on being affable,
she was in dire need of a recharge.
As she checked her purse for the necessities — phone, keys, wallet — she ran through the rest of her night in her mind. Go home, unwind, cook dinner, watch TV. Straightforward enough, but the door to her office had other plans.
Was it jammed again? She cursed under her breath as she twisted the stubborn brass knob, making a mental note to talk to Principal Trottel about renovating the rusty, dusty, crusty old building. From heated chatter in the teacher’s lounge, she already knew Sugar Maple High School hadn’t had so much as a fresh coat of paint since the Reagan administration. She could understand Trottel’s soft spot for their alma mater’s vintage flair, but a little WD-40 included in his nostalgia wouldn’t hurt.
To add insult to injury, her mystery friend
down the hall had begun playing some classical tune loud enough that they apparently couldn’t hear her nudging and pushing against her uncooperative classroom door. Mrs. Ellington couldn’t put her tongue on the title, but she found the song irritatingly familiar from years of being stationed across the hall from the music room. She must have heard it thousands of times, repeated and half-repeated by adolescent amateurs. At this very moment, it acted as a symphony for her struggle. A mockery of her plight.
She scanned the room, in desperate search of something to set her free. A wave of bitter cold trickled up her spine, all the way to the hairs on the back of her neck.
It was then that it struck.
Section BreakHello. I’m Janet, ASB vice president and first-chair violinist in the school orchestra. Although only a senior at Sugar Maple High, I’m often one of the first people in the building. My proclivity to wake up with the sun and the stone’s-throw proximity of my home to campus gives me a view of the school that most of my fellow students don’t see.
For one, it’s allowed me to develop quite the rapport with our custodian, Charles, who unlocks the front doors for me with his ample ring of keys. Through our chats, I’ve learned that he is quite fond of a nice ham-and-egg sandwich, and he’s learned that mornings aren’t terribly easy at my house. As such, he lets me through the front door before certain faculty have so much as rolled out of bed, and I gift him a
