Chapter 1
Whoever You Need It to Be
My eyes open. There was nothing but darkness around me. I sat up in bed to look around. I swung my legs to the side of the bed, looking down at what I hoped to be the floor.
I silently counted to five, and then dropped my feet to the floor; it was cold, like metal. I walked maybe two steps before stopping. I could hear soft breathing. There was someone in the room with me! I quickly spun around, but saw no one.
Who’s there?
I questioned the black room.
…Whoever you need it to be,
the dry, smooth voice called back to me.
My eyes darted back and forth across the blackened room in search of the voice’s origin.
Why are you confused? Just look at me!
I still couldn’t figure out where the voice came from. I wanted to match the voice to a face. I focused my eyes where the bed was. I could make out a figure on the bed; someone was laying there. My heart sank into my stomach. Was he there the entire time? Was I really lying next to someone without noticing?
Cautiously, I stepped towards the bed, still unable to fully see him. The closer I edged to the bed, I could make out a pair of long legs. I walked until my knees tapped the bed. Startled, I clumsily fell forward, my hands breaking my fall. He snickered. That was when I noticed it.
The other part of him that was now visible in the dark room were his eyes; those eyes that would be etched into the walls of my memory. They were the color of lavender; oh how they taunted me. They mesmerized me, yet they drove me insane, all in an instance.
I extended my hand to him as I looked deep into his eyes; he stared back at me. Beep! Beep! Beep!
My eyes shot open. I leaned over to my nightstand to shut off the alarm on my phone. It was a dream. It was vivid. I felt as if I was really there, walking, and touching the bed. I swiped my phone – 7:30AM. I still had time before work.
I opened my social media and started scrolling; looking through celebrities’ pics and the latest memes.
The blankets on my bed shifted. Zao, my black and white cat, had jumped on the bed. He meowed as he walked to me.
Morning, Zaoie,
I spoke in a baby voice to him. He meowed back.
I need to get going now, Zao. I’ll be back later.
I patted his head then rolled out of bed.
I was glad that I didn’t have to put much effort into my outfit for work. I worked at a place called ‘Quad Balanced.’ They provided their employees with a dark gray shirt with their name centered on the back. It was great because I hated figuring out what to wear for the day.
I grabbed my windbreaker from the living room closet then started for the door. I reached for my keys in the bowl next to the door but they weren’t there.
Where the hell are my keys?
I asked no one in particular. Zao came up behind me, rubbing against my leg.
Oh! You’re right. I brought them to the bedroom with me last night.
I walked back into my room and there they were, on the night stand. I grabbed them up and headed for the door. Zao and I usually talked back and forth. He was probably my only friend. Well, not probably, it was a definitely. Growing up, I didn’t have many friends, maybe two or three associates in high school, but nothing that lasted.
I went to college for Floral Design; I found that I liked looking at flowers more than I did making bouquets for people. So, I pulled out of the rest of my classes, and a year later I found this unsatisfying job with Quad Balanced. Three years later, I was still there, floating along.
I pressed a button before I walked out the door to open my garage. I started my car and waited for it to warm up before I start driving.
It was so cold that time of the year in Michigan. I got cold so easily, even in summer I brought a sweater with me inside grocery stores. I wasn’t the only one that does that, I swear!
I checked my phone for the weather. It read 44 degrees. Yep! Sounded about right for October; it brought the most beautiful scenery.
I backed out of my garage and pulled off down the street. The trees were swaying from the soft wind and the autumn colors were so serene. It was about a half-hour drive from my home in Mt. Briar to my job in Ann Arbor. There was a two-lane road that led to the freeway. It was the quickest way that I usually took to get to my job. The road could be a bit scary, especially at night. That road was very winding, slick, and surrounded by trees.
My thoughts were interrupted by my phone ringing. The ID said Mom. Of course she called while I’m rushing to work.
I accepted the call. Hello?
I spoke softly into the phone.
Eme? What are you doing?
she asked excitedly.
Uh…driving? What are you doing?
I’m at work. I just thought I would call to check on you. I haven’t heard from you in a while,
a hint of concern in her voice.
We talked just two days ago, Mom!
I couldn’t keep my eyes from squinting with a hint of confusion and annoyance. She always called me during two occasions: when I was driving or when I was watching one of my reality shows.
Well, I worry about you, Eme. You’re up there by yourself and I’m down here in Atlanta. You can at least call me sometime. If anything ever happened to you…
I had to cut her off. Mom, I’m fine! I’m careful. I always have my keys out when going to and from my car when I leave work and home. And there are lights in the parking lot at work, so you don’t have to worry so much. I swear you treat me like I’m still a child. I’m twenty-three! Or did that slip your mind?
I pulled into the parking lot at work.
I didn’t forget, Eme…
I have to go. I’ll call you later.
I hung up. I got out of the car and jogged to the door. I was going to be late. I’d been late for a few days now; I didn’t know what it was. Maybe I stay up too late, or spent too much time on my phone during the morning. I swiped my badge then went upstairs. I sat down at my desk and logged into my computer.
After eight and a half hours of replying to emails and checking tracking numbers, it was time for me to go home. Finally! My eyes could only take so much of that computer screen. I practically bolted to my Chevy Cruze.
The sun was going down fast and I had a long way home still. But, on the bright side of things, tomorrow was Friday! It’s not like I had anywhere to be, but just knowing it’s the last workday of the week for me was so refreshing.
The branches of the trees danced in the wind, appearing to reach out to grab each car that drove by. This was the sucky part about driving down that winding road to
