Patti Larsen

About me, huh? Well, my official bio reads like this: Patti Larsen is a multiple award-winning author with a passion for the voices in her head. But that sounds so freaking formal, doesn’t it? I’m a storyteller who hears character's demands so loudly I have to write them down. I love the idea of sports even though sports hate me. I’ve dabbled in everything from improv theater to film making and writing TV shows, singing in an all girl band to running my own hair salon. But always, always, writing books calls me home.I’ve had my sights set on world literary domination for a while now. Which means getting my books out there, to you, my darling readers. It’s the coolest thing ever, this job of mine, being able to tell stories I love, only to see them all shiny and happy in your hands... thank you for reading. As for the rest of it, I’m short (permanent), slightly round (changeable) and blonde (for ever and ever). I love to talk one on one about the deepest topics and can’t seem to stop seeing the big picture. I happily live on Prince Edward Island, Canada, home to Anne of Green Gables and the most beautiful red beaches in the world, with my pug overlord and overlady, six lazy cats and Gypsy Vanner gelding, Fynn.

    Chapter One

She was exactly his type, and he knew how to impress her. Though, when Logan lifted the keys to take his latest up-coming conquest for a ride, his co-worker—and most boring best friend ever—sighed like he was more grandma than go-getter.

You’re going to get caught one of these times. The last thing Logan needed was a lecture, especially from Brandon. Seriously, he needed to chill.

You didn’t see her tits, dude. The blond flashed his tall, lanky bro a wicked grin, pocketing the key fob left behind in his loving care, tossing his valet jacket behind the podium. "My brother, she’s a score. Watch me hit that." Not hard to unbutton the top of his white dress shirt, black pants and shoes enough to give him a pass as the owner of the Pagani roadster he knew would get Chelsea to part those luscious legs.

If Logan had learned anything working this gig, hot girls loved a hot car.

The lot behind the club beckoned, underground secured garage his domain. He did take a long, aching moment to admire the gunmetal black finish trimmed in vibrant red, the low-slung chassis, feeling his dick harden for more reasons than just the girl he promised to pick up in ten.

Someday, he said, sinking behind the wheel into the leather seat, revving the engine before slamming it into reverse and peeling out into the California night.

He’d just made the street, cranking the stereo’s mega speakers while the top slid back and the humidity washed away in the breeze when the engine suddenly died.

Logan had one instant of irritated what the fuck.

Before the car exploded in a fireball of destruction.

While the partygoers at Exotica nightclub danced on, oblivious.

    Chapter Two

Kinsey sipped politely at her coffee, not wanting to comment on the sub-par quality of the truly hideous black water that passed for her favorite drink at the 9th, not for the first time sighing over her forgetfulness (why didn’t she just bring some from home?) and the fact she was, and would always be, just that freaking polite when Gerri offered.

Her redheaded detective bestie grinned that wicked bheast grin of hers over her own mug, knowing, Kinsey was well aware, that the burnt and revolting beverage the cops around here typically accepted because of the caffeine level in no way met the anthropologist’s high standards. As far as Kinsey was concerned, the nasty stuff would be put to better use fueling someone’s car.

These morning visits weren’t uncommon. She needed to bring beans with her. Would tolerate the impending teases and jibes from the officers, worth it for a decent cup of java.

While Gerri, those green eyes alight with mischief, downed hers in a heavy gulp and Kinsey shuddered and delicately set her own mug aside, the logo of the 9th precinct turned partway out of view as though ashamed of its contents.

    It should be.

You’re right, Kinsey said when Gerri flipped closed the case file they’d been talking about, keeping their voices down so the other officers in the bullpen wouldn’t overhear. That sounds eerily familiar.

It has to be the same creature I saw the night Joe died, Gerri said, hand settling on the cover of the file as if to possess it completely. Green scales, grabbed someone in the middle of a drug deal, and swam off. Her emerald eyes clouded a moment, lost in memory, obviously.

Kinsey reached forward, touched her hand. You did everything you could that night, she said. Joe didn’t die because of you, Gerri. You had no idea what you were up against.

The detective shook off her past, scowling at the file beneath her hand. Very true, she said. And I still don’t. But that thing killed my partner, Kins. Now that I know what I am, I’m not freaked out anymore. She winked, shrugged before Kinsey could comment. "Okay, mostly not. At least I know it’s still around. I plan to hunt it
