Opening to Book 1 – The Case of the Hollywood Art Heist
You killed him, didn’t you?
No sooner had the words left his mouth than Jeffrey Jones regretted saying them. The man standing before him lowered his chin and glowered at Jeffrey under his eyebrows. Without a word, he went to the front door and locked it. Now there was nowhere to run.
Jeffrey tensed and took a step back. The man turned to face him, his breathing slow and deliberate, drops of sweat glistening on his forehead. He stared at the boy and rolled up his sleeves.
Yes, I killed him,
he said, and now I’m going to kill you.
Jeffrey stared at the man, wild-eyed, and braced for his attack. The deadly tale of mystery and suspense that he and his friends had stumbled upon was now going to end....
That’s how it all started, the opening page to the opening book in what has become one of the world’s most popular mystery book series. Since then, thousands of readers around the world have thrilled to these tales of mystery, action and suspense.
The underlying theme of these books is friendship. Friendship and loyalty and the pains of growing up, as expressed through stories of mystery and suspense. The situations the characters find themselves in are fantastic, but the emotional content is very real and sometimes quite intense. For Jeffrey, the series lead, that means a life of frustration, loneliness and unrequited love.
Here’s a review that a reader left for the first book in the series:
5 Stars! Utterly Fantastic!!!!!
I absolutely adored this novel, as a thirteen year old girl I have found friendship, mystery and enjoyment of this book! It was such a great book that I stayed up until 1:32 am!!!! Which is not healthy per se but I am glad I did, I could not put this book down. I followed along to the story being told and was engaged into finding out who was guilty. It was like I was there being a part of the North Hollywood Detective Club
with the four teens/tweens!! Please write more of these books cause I will not stop reading these!!!!! – Jordan
As the book’s author, all I can say is that’s the greatest review I’ve ever read. I rate both this review and the reviewer, Jordan, Utterly Fantastic!
If you’re new to this series, you might be wondering just who these book’s characters are. Let’s take a look.
Chapter 2 - Who Are These Master Sleuths?
The major players of this mystery book series are Jeffrey Jones, Pablo Reyes, Marisol Rodriguez, and Susie Norris. They all attend the same school, and Jeffrey, Marisol and Susie all live on the same street.
Jeffrey Jones
Jeffrey is 14-years-old in books 1 and 2 of the series, and 15-years-old in books 3 and 4. He lives with his father and mother in North Hollywood, California.
As a child, Jeffrey was often left to himself while his parents worked or attended to their own business. In the few times when his parents were both at home, they often argued. When that happened, Jeffrey stayed in his room, alone.
Jeffrey was also overweight and picked on by the other kids at school. To escape his loneliness, the fighting between his parents, and the taunting he endured at school, Jeffrey turned to reading and books became his friends.
Jeffrey’s constant reading took his mind off his troubles and made him smart, but it also weakened his eyes and led to wearing glasses, which became one more thing that the kids at school used to make fun of him.
As a teen, Jeffrey’s bedroom is filled with books, spilling out of his bookcase and piled in stacks on the floor. One thing Jeffrey doesn’t like though, are long books, which to him is any book over 250 pages. Jeffrey thinks people who write long books are snobs, who would rather hear themselves talk (or write) than entertain their readers. (Author’s note: I agree with Jeffrey.)
Because he reads so much, Jeffrey is the smartest kid in his school, and despite all his troubles, he has one ace up his sleeve: he’s a master investigator with a reputation for solving mysteries.
Jeffrey’s preferred method of investigation is the application of logic to any given situation. Sometimes this gets him in trouble, as his need to know and uncover the truth often overrides his concern for safety.
Growing up, Jeffrey never had a best friend, someone to share experiences with. In fact, he had no friends or playmates at all. In the sixth grade, Pablo Reyes, a popular kid at school, took a liking to him and since then the two have become inseparable. Pablo remains Jeffrey’s one true friend.
Jeffrey harbors a secret liking for Marisol Rodriguez, a girl who lives next door to him and attends his same school. Jeffrey has liked Marisol ever since her family first moved in when they were both in the second grade. As a young boy, he often stared out his bedroom window, hoping to catch
