Chapter 1

Good Morning News. Your daily source of politics, economy, social life, and all things magic. This month, manufactured potions reach the highest price this decade. Jack read dramatically from the local newspaper, amusing his pair of friends.

Fools. Who are they trying to rob? As if we didn’t know everybody in this minuscule town. Cate answered him. Although bothered, the news wasn’t enough to disturb her careless disposition.

The real fools are the ones buying these potions. We are all equally as capable of creating them. This is all just plain laziness. I’ve never met witch or wizard unable to make a potion if they try successfully. He replied

If they try.

From the doorway of the living room rose the voice of Tess, completing the group.

Would you like more coffee, Jack? She asked as she served one more cup for her and Cate.

Not really, I should get going, Jack replied.

As he gathered himself, coat and scarf, Jack listened to the expected complaints of his two friends. He considered himself a social man. Being a teacher at the local school of magic, he had acquainted himself with close to every family that resided in that small town of witches and wizards. Additionally, a little beyond his innate nervous and shy manners, he was quite the charmer. He had a quick wit and his articulate way of speech, added to his status of professor, had ladies circling him constantly. Jack sported his dark blond hair neatly combed, and his beard kept nicely.
