Chapter 1

Ewan looked out over the moors of the home he loved and cherished.  He felt the heaviness in his heart even as he drew strength from the beautiful sight before him.  His father, the chief of Clan MacPhee for over forty years, lay in the great hall, strong hands clasped around his sword, peaceful in death.  The hunting trip where he met his fate still blazed in Ewan’s eyes every time he closed them—the wild boar charging and spearing Duncan, the long trip back to the castle while Duncan writhed in agony, and then the inevitable demise of the man who gave him his life and legacy. Ewan stood for a few more precious moments before he tore himself away from the calm and back to the burden of his inheritance, the job of clan chief looming before him.

The tall, muscular red-head with climbed down the stairs to the great hall, trying to look anywhere but at the front of the room where his father laid in state.  The clans were beginning to gather to honor the leader, and it was Ewan’s responsibility to tend to their needs and be the host of the gathering. He squared his shoulders, took a deep breath and stepped forward.  His mother, Brie, met him and gave a stern nod as she acknowledged him.
