About this ebook
A teenager with a magical gift is sent to an unusual boarding school in this urban fantasy novel by the acclaimed co-authors of the Shadow Grail series.
Fifteen-year-old Tomas Torres has a most unusual gift: he can start fires with his fingertips and conjure fireballs with his hands. When he’s arrested for a mysterious arson, the court decides to convict him—despite the lack of evidence—and send him off to school. As far as Tomas is concerned, St. Rhiannon’s School for the Gifted and Exceptional Student sounds like jail by another name. But once he arrives on campus, he’s surprised to discover he’s not alone.
St. Rhia's is a school for students of all ages with gifts like Tomas's: pre-cogs, storm-callers, witches, healers, wizards, techno-shamans, psionics, firestarters, teleporters, psychics, sensitives and much more. Things he could never have imagined are common occurrences at St. Rhia's, and soon Tomas is eager to learn everything he can from his attractive young mentor, VeeVee. While Tomas may be gifted, he must learn to control his powers and live by the laws of magic. And there’s no time to lose, because Tomas and his friends are about to embark on journey through St. Rhia's and beyond, testing their gifts in the outside world and the magical worlds of Chaos.

- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5Fun book! Admittedly, a lot of the fun was seeing the characters of Bedlam's Bard and the Guardians (and a bit of SERRAted Edge) from a (very) different perspective - Tomas and VeeVee are somewhat bland, at least at the beginning. They do gain depth as the story develops, though, and I'd really like to see more of them. The different perspective also expands on that universe - Guardians from a semi-outside view, the interweaving of the three series to show, more strongly than I'd noticed before, that this _is_ one world with different groups dealing with different bits of it. There's some teen angst, and some angst that is distinctly adult (from a teen character or two). And the story ends nicely, despite wrapping up almost none of the loose threads - it's begging for a sequel (maybe with Tomas and VeeVee, maybe with Rosa, or someone else...) and I eagerly await that book.
- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5I really enjoyed this book, but before I say why, let me put in a disclaimer/warning:
If you aren't a long time fan of Lackey's Elves on the Road world (Bedlam's Bard mostly, but also Urban Elves, and Diana Tregard series) move on. This book is less a novel in it's own right and more fan service for folks who want another taste of their favorite world and characters.
And actually, that's pretty much why I enjoyed the book. Tomas was an interesting enough character, though he could have been more thoroughly developed. VeeVee has potential, but spends more time infodumping her own history than interacting or moving the plot. Cameos or secondary character roles for Eric Banyon, Hosea Songmaker, Kayla Smith, Dottie (mechanic from Fairgrove) and a few others turned an otherwise mediocre story into a really fun read just from the excitement of seeing what they were up to and the anticipation of who was going to pop up next.
Ending was a bit of a disappointment, very rushed and it felt like the authors tried to cram 3 or 4 potential plots into the story without fully developing any--Tomas' struggle to accept magic, family drama in the Torres family, two romance plots...
I'm happy I bought it, and I'll pick up a sequel if they write one just to see my old fave's again, but I hope they'd put more effort into a well developed plot and characters - Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5Harry Potter rip off - but very well done. Tomas is a porr mexican immigrant in New York, at 15 he still has a few standards adn morals left instilled in him by his mother and love for his baby sister. He doens't want ot beocme just another gangbanger, but he knows how to move in their world modding autos. But when he stumbles across a grocery jacking where the robber is holding his sister at gunpoinmt he loses control - and throws a freaking fireball at him. This very quickly gets him sent to a Magical school for Gifted and extrodnary Talents where almost everything he knew about the world proves to be wrong - with perhaps the exception of what girls like.Told mostly from Tomas' POV we get a few chapters from his school mentor the experienced VeeVee this contrast in world views hekps to set the scene and explain a few basic gound rule s- although the opening coupel of her chapters come across as very stodgy infodumps. But it does get better after that! A fun school and great settings. So far we've avoided the great world destroying nemisis that you the unique hero can save us all from - but otehr than that it's kids having fun in a modern magical school. I don't think this will ever quite reach HP fame, but it is at least as good. Although I'm not sure ther eis any more to the series and there deserves to be.
