The servants poured fragrant oils into the steaming bath, which was filled with floating flowers and vibrant herbs. Another helped me free of my robes, hands lingering over my body. Years of fencing and courtly dances left me lithe and lean, sculpted by the nobility of my blood. I stepped into the warm water and settled in up to my chest.
These men sent to serve me were of the most delicious stock in the land. Perhaps the queen knew of my predilection. Perhaps she knew that marriage to the princess of the Fairfolk was among the least of my desires, despite the honor and prestige that would come along with it. I did not want to be in the eye of the kingdom, thousands looking up at me just as I gazed upon the capitol city from the massive windows of the tower.
I leaned back with a sigh, lowering myself until the water reached my chin. I should be focusing on the good it would do. For those people below me, for my own wealth, and my own standing. The Fairfolk offer peace and trade between our kingdoms with the marriage of their princess Illuvial, I would be a hero for changing the history of the world.
Of course, it should have been my cousin, Aegir. His death during the jousting tourney nearly caused a riot, but thankfully the Emperor of the Fairfolk found me, Prince Vallian, to be a worthy replacement. Not to say we had our differences - the only kind of jousting I ever engaged in involved two handsome fellows from the brothel and about fifty gold coins.
The water grew cool, and I gestured towards the servants to bring another kettle over to warm it. His amber eyes expressed that he would not mind warming me in other, more creative ways. I sighed and closed my eyes, inhaling the heady oils. He could wait for his invitation to my chambers until I felt ready. Besides it all, there was something amusing about making them work for my attention.
