About this ebook
John Henry Newman was a very prominent religious figure throughout his life. As such, he came under fire for his staunchly traditional beliefs. “Apologia Pro Vita Sua” is an articulation and defense of the stance he took regarding the Anglican and Roman Catholic churches. Once a clergyman in the Church of England, Newman believed that the church had regressed and strayed from certain Catholic tenets, regarding dogma and worship. Eventually, distraught by the Anglican Church, Newman left for the Roman Catholic Church, eventually receiving the title of Cardinal, granted by Pope Leo XIII. In 1864, Newman was attacked by Kingsley, an Anglican clergyman in a magazine article, criticizing Newman for lacking reason or regard for truth. “Apologia Pro Vita Sua” was Newman’s response, giving rise to the idea that Newman’s intelligence served as a balancing counterpart for his faith. Today, it is apparent that Newman’s lengthy essay silenced his critics.

- Rating: 2 out of 5 stars2/5Autobiografie en rechtvaardiging van zijn overstap van anglicanisme naar katholicisme. Kanhelaas niet meer echt boeien.
- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5Important read for anyone who is Anglican but finds themselves drawn to Rome. I'm not really qualified to give a good review of this book, but will say this: know your church history and Anglican documents well before you read--for instance it's important to know the 39 Articles, or at least have access to them, so you understand what Newman was wrestling with before he wrote Tract 90 and later went to Rome.
- Rating: 2 out of 5 stars2/5Boy, did I not really get much out of this book. I was a bit curious, having also been one who sort of unexpectedly went Catholic one day, to some persons' surprise. To me the book is just rather locked in its timely position in 19th century English church life, and more universal aspects of faith and religion were passed aside. Fine, okay, no one says an autobiography has to be generational, but I expected more by this book's repuation.
