I read _Anne of Green Gables_ probably more than 20 times as a young person. I recently started re-reading it with my daughter, and--although we are early on as yet--it is as fresh as it ever was, with a character who still appeals, and enough drama and emotion to satisfy even kids used to today's more action-oriented children's lit.

I was a little slow to warm to the young Anne. Her constant monologues wore me out, but as she got a little older, I grew to love her. I loved Marilla and Matthew from the start, such wonderful characters. The plot felt a little episodic in the early going but then fell into something with a more coherent trajectory later on. I somehow missed Anne when I was young, but my inner child can still enjoy her.

So incredibly good! The PBS movies matched the book really well. I’ve always loved the movies but this is the first time I’ve read the book. Izzie loved it as well!

I have loved the TV series, Anne With an E, the latest TV version of Anne of Green Gables. I'm not sure how I missed this series when I was a child, but I know I would have loved it then. Charming, sweet, and enjoyable!

Loved this as a youth and in college. Revisited it through the Craft Lit podcast. Can't wait to share it with my nieces - they should be old enough in the next few years.

My Mom has been talking about reading this to the patients at the nursing home where she works. They look forward to it every day.

    My grandmother adored this series.

So when I came across this book in the audiobook section of my library, I thought I'd give it a try. I had no idea I'd enjoy it as much as I did

It is nearly impossible for me to describe my absolute fondness for this book and the character of Anne, herself. She is perhaps the most relatable, lovable fictional character in my heart, and the background of Green Gables and Avonlea, charming beautiful places, so well described and romantic, I hardly need the words on the page to love it. I feel that Anne Shirley and I, are mist definitely kindred spirits.

I absolutely adore Anne of Green Gables! I remember reading Gables and all the other Anne books growing up (I went on a Little House on the Prairie kick as well, around this time). I loved reading all about a girl who I could relate to and who talked too much and didn't want to sit around in dresses all the time and just look pretty. She was a unique character who really exhibited the 'be yourself' persona and I loved it.

I love, love, love this book. I still have my old dog-eared copy from middle school. Ann-with-an-e is hired by elderly brother and sister Marilla and Matthew Cuthbert. They wanted a boy to help out with their farm but got Anne instead in a mix-up. Marilla is slow to warm up to Anne, who can be overly dramatic at times, uses large words and has a tendency to name things around the farm (she named the Cuthbert's pond The Lake of Shining Waters). Anne is not a wholly sympathetic character, she can be vain and bossy and has a fiery temper that burns as bright as her hair. On her first day at school she breaks a slate over the head of a boy who teases her. But she is a compelling character, proving herself to be useful and dependable. I cannot recommend this book enough, especially to young female readers. Despite her faults, Anne is a strong and smart girl with a powerful imagination. She is, in a sense, like any other girl and can still be relatable despite being written over 100 years ago. I would also recommend watching the 80s miniseries in conjunction with the book. I remember reading this book in school and also watching snippet of the miniseries.

Anne (with an ‘e’ of course) Shirley starts out as a mistake. The elderly Matthew and Marilla Cuthbert had planned on adopting a boy to help Matthew with the chores on their Prince Edward Island farm. What are they to do with the red-haired, high-spirited girl who arrives instead? This is a great children series especially for little girls. I loved Anne's spirit, her imagination and her adventures. She would be a great friend and a fun playmate. Highly recommended and a great look at life on Prince Edward Island. A must classic read for young and old.

One of the most heartwarming and wonderful books ever written.
Anne Shirley's personality and imagination are addictive. The secondary characters are engaging, the humor is quirky and the language is excellent.
    A must read!

Spirited, fanciful, loyal, loving, and diligent, Anne is a delightful creation, brimful of emotion and adventure. The simple charms of Prince Edward Island, the abundance of nature, and the memorable scrapes she gets into are so. vivid as to be somehow in our common heritage memory, already familiar even.as one discovers them. Poignant, funny, wise, the book is a well-rounded, timeless pleasure.

A red-headed, energetic, talkative orphan girl adopted by the Cuthberts--Anne tends to dream while Marilla Cuthbert is more of a practical sort. Anne meets her friendship-soulmate in Diana and enjoys an academic rivalry with Gilbert.

"Why must people kneel down to pray? If I really wanted to pray I’ll tell you what I'd do. I'd go out into a great big field all alone or in the deep, deep woods and I'd look up into the sky—up—up—up—into that lovely blue sky that looks as if there was no end to its blueness. And then I'd just feel a prayer.”So yesterday was full of fabulous. I pretty much spent the day listening to Anne of Green Gables, narrated by Rachel McAdams, and it was delightful. I somehow missed this one in my younger days, and I loved it. McAdams delivery was perfect - I think Anne might have gotten on my nerves a bit if I had read this one in print, but the audio was lovely. Definitely one I will listen to again, and it made me tear up in a few places.

This is another classic children's book I've never read and, I was fearful that the story of an orphaned child being taken in by a woman and her brother on Price Edward Island in Canada would be the last word in treacle. However, red-haired Anne is too full of life to sink into bathos and the story of how she wins the heart of people who thought they were getting a boy to help them on their farm, is a delight to read 110 years after it was published. Now that I've read this first book, I think I'll continue on with the series.

In this 100-year-old childhood classic, vivacious, imaginative orphan Anne (with an "e") Shirley has comical misadventures and charms everyone on St. Edward Island. This novel has its sweet, nostalgic moments, but, all in all, I found it a little overlong and cloying, kind of like drinking three large tumblers of raspberry cordial.

Marilla and Matthew Cuthbert adopt Anne because they need some help around the house. Marilla is sure she’s going to be a handful, but Matthew finds himself wrapped around Anne’s finger from the first time they meet. Anne is an incredibly sweet and thoughtful girl, but she’s also a daydreamer which can lead her into trouble. It seems that whether or not Montgomery intended it, she wrote Anne as a perfect example of a girl with ADHD. This is the first book in the Anne/Avonlea series and follows Anne until she graduates from school. It is a tender little book and one I am very glad I finally read.

I mean, how do I review Anne of Green Gables? A beautifully sweet story about a red-headed orphan that has become such a staple in Canadian literature and that I grew up loving as a child in the Great White North. I simply cannot. However, I can say that returning to this book has given me a sense of familiar comfort that was desperately needed this fall. I can also say that Rachel McAdams' narration was a joy to listen to; her voice fitted perfectly with the overall vibe of the text.Essentially, I am incredibly pleased with this audiobook and am entirely confident that I will be listening to it multiple times over.

When I was younger I hated Anne of Green Gables. My mother forced me to watch it with her as some sort of weird bonding time. Every adaptation I despised.

Now that I’m an adult and can make my own choices. I like it. I understand why people like it.

I think I wouldn't have liked this as a child (I honestly can't remember if I've read it before and forgotten it, or just never read it), as it's one of those books about being a child and going to school, and doesn't have Adventures or Dragons or Spaceships in it.But it is a beautiful and charming story. Anne is a passionate orphan who is accidentally adopted by the farmers of Green Gables (they had sent for a boy), who spends her childhood getting into imaginative scrapes. The book is rich with beauty, and a love of nature and learning. And the character of Anne burns through it, always able to try and make the best of things, honest, enthusiastic, talented and beautiful. The final few chapters take a very different tone, and feel rushed - after the endless days of childhood, Anne is through college, suffering bereavement, and nobly changing her life plans all the last few chapters.

I have long loved LM Montgomery's work, and I was thrilled to find this wonderful special limited edition when I visited the Anne of Green Gables Museum in Park Corner, PEI. The tome itself is a truly lovely thing. And the story -- well, in my eyes and in my heart -- the story never grows old.

Before I got married, my middle name was Anne. With an “e.” Just like Anne of Green Gables. Now my middle name is my maiden name, but that’s besides the point.I must have read Anne of Green Gables by L.M. Montgomery when I was a little girl, but all I remember is watching the movie. So I decided to get through a bunch of the Anne books, obviously starting with the first: Anne of Green Gables.Anyone who knows anything about Anne knows that she feels like a plain child with red hair which she despises, and that she never stops talking. For the full review (and a pic of my very old copy of the book), visit Love at First Book

I can’t think of a single negative thing to say about it. Now, hear me out. I think Montgomery creates lovely, complex characters. Reading the character dynamics and arcs was fascinating. When Marilla finally verbally tells Anne that she loves her, I was moved. As well, it’s clear how Anne matures over the course of the book - which spans years - and it was a believable change. She’s still that same imaginative, outspoken girl, but she knows how to carry herself better, etc.

This’ll seem so obvious, but I really enjoyed the scenes with Anne and Gilbert. Aside from his stunt when they met, he really seems super sweet. Ahem, he tried to give her a candy heart as another apology. How adorable is that? He genuinely rooted for her and even went out of his way to be extremely kind to her, even though she hadn’t said she’d forgiven him yet. for example, rooting for her during her reading, and giving up the local school so she could easily stay at Green Gables. Also, the fact that when she finally tells him she’s forgiven him, he walks her home and they spend half an hour at the gate talking is really lovely. I’ve read that their love story is one of the most well-written ones, and I agree.

Of course, the relationship between Anne and Matthew was also beautiful. He cares for her so much, and he really isn't afraid to show that, despite being an otherwise very shy person.

Overall, this book was a great joy to read. Montgomery knows how to paint strong pictures with her talent of description and she easily made me care for the characters. I think I’ll buy the sequels.

I never read this when I was young. I can see the attraction, for the pre-teen girl, and indeed my own daughter enjoyed it. However, for an adult the story holds very little of interest. I can enjoy the descriptions of nature, but it is too preachy and has little character development except for Anne and a bit for Marilla.
