Victima held her father’s hand, nervously grasping his warm palm with her sweaty fingers. She looked up at him, tugging him so he would look down at her. He did, not with a cold or dismissive look but with a face of warmth and kindness. It was the face that he always displayed to reassure her. It always put her at ease when he gave her a smile. Her mother stood on her other side, either holding her other palm or placing her hands in front of her in the preferred formal position.
Daddy why are we meeting humans today?
Victima asked.
Her father looked at her, and spoke in a kind voice. Because it is our sacred duty to properly represent our species to the humans.
Grandpa said they were evil for taking our land away and oppressing us.
Victima said.
Do not listen to grandfather.
Victima’s mother responded. Grandpa’s views are wrong and they’re the reason why so many ikaeu suffer today.
Then why does Grandpa say humans are evil and have horns and long ears?
Victima asked.
Because Grandfather cannot let go of the past.
Father said. Us ikaeu leaders need to become friends with the humans.
A guard walked up to the family and knelt. Your highness, please allow me to introduce to you the President of the United Nations of the Universe?
Welcome in our guests with distinction.
Victima’s father bellowed out.
The entire room fell into a moment of silence before the doors opened again and the military band began playing the national anthem of United Nations of the Universe (UNU), the nation the humans ruled. Victima looked in awe as the Ikaeu Praetorian Guard and soldiers of the UNU Royal Guard marched in unison to welcome in a human man and his entourage. The man was very old, far older then Victima’s parents. He had a light complexion, with dirty blond grayish hair, green eyes, and something on his upper lip father called a mustache. He wore a military uniform, with colors that looked like a mix of mustard green, brown dirt, and other shades in between. The man took off his hat, revealing some strange headwear with a six sided star in the middle.
The human man bowed to Victima’s family. Grand Princeps Gaius Spes Mutare Tragici CDLVIII and Calpurnia Pulchritudo Vitae CCCLVII, it is an honor to behold you two.
Please rise Thomas Paul Wolfe Tone, the first President of the new United Nations of the Universe, the successor to your old and grand nation. We are greatly honored to have such a well distinguished hero of the humans and her allies to visit us during such a tumultuous time in our species history.
Victima’s father then gestured and bowed to the human woman standing next to Thomas Wolfe Tone. First Lady of the Republic, Josephine Kathleen Wolfe Tone, it is a pleasure to meet you.
It is very lovely to greet you your highnesses this day.
Josephine smiled.
Gaius then waved his hand to direct the two humans’ attention to Victima. I wish to introduce to you our daughter, Victima Politica Tragici CCCI.
Victima cowered a bit and clung tightly to her father’s trousers. She looked up, expecting to see dark evil eyes stare down at her. Instead when she looked up she saw the same eyes she was familiar with when her own father stared down at her. Thomas gave a heartwarming kind smile as he stared at her. You are such a lovely creature, full of life and curiosity.
Thomas said, then gestured to a boy, who Victima hadn’t noticed was cowering behind him the same way she had with her father. I wish to also introduce to you my son, Augusto César Sandino Wolfe Tone. Augusto there’s no need to be afraid, bow like a gentlemen to the daughter of the Princeps.
The human boy slowly walked up to Victima, slightly nervous and gave a curtly bow with his nervous expression. Victima noticed how young he was, probably a year or two older then her, yet he was also immaculately dressed in a military style uniform similar to his father. He held in his left hand a small furry creature with wings. Augusto let go of his father and clung onto the creature with both hands before giving a bow. Your Grace, a pleasure to meet you.
He said.
The entire procession and ceremony flew by as Victima drowned it out of her head, only examining the many people present. A long speech she didn’t understand, formal greetings, and of course a lavish dinner. Victima quietly observed the children clustered into small groups around each other, either making glances towards other groups, or goofing off. Being the daughter of the ikaeu next in line for the throne of their small empire Victima found herself surrounded by fellow ikaeus her age. Four in particular stayed by her all night, close friends of hers who she always hung out with. Most of the kids that came up to Victima were girls like her, but a few we boys. One, whom Victima personally did not like, came back to her again and again asking for a dance, to play, or share food with. Finally on the seventh attempt he gave her a glass of juice. Victima rolled her eyes and took it. Just because I took this doesn’t mean I want to play Probus.
Probus only frowned. I know I asked this before Your Grace but do you want to dance?
No I don’t, stop asking me.
Victima said.
Why don’t you? Tell me why.
Probus asked.
Because you’re a bully. You hurt us and we don’t like it.
Victima said. I’d rather dance with a human.
I am not a bully.
Probus said.
You pinch and slap us all the time.
One of Victima’s friends, named Soror said.
Yeah, we don’t want to hang out with you. Go dance with someone else.
Another one of the group, called Confidit, said.
Probus frowned then walked away again. Why can’t he leave us alone?
