Lucifer, Son of the Morning, the Devil himself, proclaimed, I will be like the Most High.
The fallen angels agreed and made themselves gods among man. And man worshiped them as the Olympian gods. Mans’ heart strayed from the one true and living God, Yahweh. Other demons walked away from Lucifer and created their own sector of deity, being worshiped by the Pharaoh’s of Egypt, and their nations. And the gods had sons and daughters.
Yahweh, who sits high and looks down low, proclaimed, I will remedy this.
Brahm
What did it feel like to meet a god?
No different than it felt meeting anyone else. The only difference was I had to look up a lot. He was floating in midair after all. I didn’t understand why. He had two perfectly good legs and was well capable of walking. So why did he bother flying? If it was to prove his deity to me, he didn’t have to. It was obvious he wasn’t quite normal from the two white doves that constantly flew above his head. He wasn’t annoyed with their fluttering and cooing in the least: an exceptional inhuman attribute. Whereas I, after a mere few minutes of being in his presence, wanted nothing more than to take his golden bow off his back and kill them with it. How did he ever master the ability to concentrate with those two flying all around him all the time? What were they to him that he should have had to learn to begin with? I could barely focus on what he was saying because of them. But the little I did hear made my heart drum as rapidly as the beating of their wings.
What do you mean Affinity Marriage?
Cupid rolled his eyes, throwing his hands in the air. Unfortunately, his blows missed the two doves that flew above him, disappointing me.
Have you not been listening to a word I’ve said?
I didn’t answer. I was too stunned to. The legendary god was suddenly agitated. Not at the fluttering birds as I was. But at me!
The old man drew out a golden arrow from his quiver and smacked it across the crown of my head like a schoolmaster swats his wand at a misbehaving student. I thought the hit would hurt but it didn’t. It felt more like a tap. But I did begin to worry. I didn't know Cupid's whole life story, but I had heard the tale of the power of his arrows. If pierced with them, they had the power to make a man fall in love with the first woman he laid eyes on. Did a smack from his arrow have the same effect? The only woman around was the widow, Casterdale. She was old, with a wart as big as a thumb on the corner of her head, and her nose was always runny!
Pay attention before I run you through and make you do what you're fearing right now!
Cupid thundered. I swallowed a large lump in my throat miraculously hearing every word he said from then on.
Cupid’s wrinkled face crumpled as he rubbed it with his spotted hand, mumbling under his breath in the Olympian tongue.
Youth is surely wasted on the young.
The wizened old man came down from his hovered place in the air and set his feet on the ground. He was tall like me. A thing I did not consider while he was floating cross-legged on nothing. The old man’s deep wrinkles seemed to speak of a life too complicated to begin to tell and yet his agility spoke of the triumph over all he had seen and endured through his many undetermined years. His eyes leveled with mine holding a message for me that seemed as urgent as a dying man’s last wish. I could see it as plainly as I could see the rest of him. It was there, imprinted in the coarse silver ring of his eyes that encased a hint of brown surrounding his pupils. Stars were in the old man’s gaze, twinkling like passing comets. Each twinkle became as distracting as the two doves had been and again, I feared my focus would break.
Listen to me, Brahm. War broke out between the Greek and the Nubian gods. Let’s just say Ares went too far and tampered with the peace treaty between the Nubian god, Ra and our own, Jupiter, over the recklessness of one of his sons,
Cupid’s sparkle slightly dimmed thinking of it. Even in Ares’ old age, he is still impulsive.
I shrugged my shoulders, proud I was able to focus on his words as he spoke, considering the persistent flight of the two doves and the comets soaring in his eyes.
What does any of this have to do with me?
Well, as I said before one of Ares’ sons, Batum, recklessly bedded one of Ra’s daughters and treated her like a common whore afterward. Her brother fought Batum and defeated him honorably, but out of spite, Batum took her brother’s arm which caused the war. The Nubian god of storms, Set, and Zeus, the Greek god of Lightning, were the last to fall. Horus and Ares were locked in battle unable to defeat each other until Poseidon jabbed his trident through Horus. Then Horus killed Poseidon with his own trident, taking Poseidon in death with him. So many of the old gods have been lost. The blood that was spilled was great and the death toll of the gods climbed to heights it never had in a millennium. We were going to die. All of us were going to die for honor's sake. So, to end the war, I shot my arrow in the hearts of Batum and Ra’s daughter, making them fall in love. I sacrificed one of my daughters and gave her to Ra’s son who lost his arm. Every surviving god on both sides must give a child of deity away to purchase peace. That is where you come in.
My head jerked back. Me? How?
Brahm,
he squeezed my shoulder. As the only living heir of Jupiter, you must marry Ra’s daughter, Raah, for the peace treaty made between Jupiter and Ra to be fully healed.
The impact of the decree was like the hind legs of a bull hitting me square in the chest.
What?
I staggered back setting a hand over my chest.
You heard me.
I had heard him loud and clear, and yet I could not understand it. I knew my father was Jupiter, but I didn’t know him. I had seen him only twice in my life. Once when I was just a boy. The other time I saw him was just a few years ago, a week after my mother passed. He was old, heavily white-bearded, but immensely robust. He was taller than I, which was impressive considering I was every bit of seven feet. I was the
