- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5Wonderful new collection of some of Jane Yolen's many delightful stories. There's a really lovely selection here, and Yolen's amazing imagination and writing transport the reader through a dizzying array of worlds and an incomparable display of storytelling skill.
Advanced reader's copy provided by Edelweiss. - Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5Jane Yolen’s collection THE EMERALD CIRCUS is pure delight for anyone who craves inspired retellings of classics from literature, or re-imaginings of the lives of real literary figures. Yolen takes a slanted look at the lives of Emily Dickinson, Hans Christian Andersen, and Edgar Allen Poe, and she creates some stellar “what if” moments for Lancelot, Dorothy (from Oz), Alice (from Wonderland), and others. Yolen’s writing is beautiful, her pacing is perfect, and the way she takes stories that have been done over and over again in a whole new direction is sublime. My favorite part of the collection (if I have to choose just one) is her take on Peter Pan and Wendy’s story in which Peter and the Lost Boys are pretty contemptible, and the girls of Neverland exist only to serve them until… well, you should read it and find out. It’s rare to find a short story collection that doesn’t contain at least one “meh” story, but THE EMERALD CIRCUS nails it, and my sincere thanks to the publisher and NetGalley for a copy of the e-book in exchange for my honest review.
- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5Brilliant stories. I prefer my involvement level at 6-7 and these were more the 5-6 range. Many of these stories are a celebration of 19th and early 20th century fantasy with its strong tincture of whimsy. But for me 'The Quiet Monk' returned me to [The Hidden Treasure of Glaston] a treasure from my pre-teen years. I too treasured Howard Pyle's Robin Hood (and King Arthur). And, a bit of surprise, A Knot of Toads delivers a miniature jewel of a gothic romance.
- Rating: 3 out of 5 stars3/5Short stories inspired by fairy tales. Fun to read.
- Rating: 3 out of 5 stars3/5I wanted to like this book so much more than I did. The premise is amazing and I've been reading Jane Yolen books for awhile, but, for me, these sort of fell flat. I can understand how others would adore these, because some of them are fun and they are well-written, but this book just wasn't for me. I would still recommend it for those that are fans of fairy tales or fairy tale retellings. 3 out of 5 stars.
