Treasure On Crooked Island - Dennis Moore
Chapter 1
In the uncharted backwaters of the Caribbean, southeast of the Bahamas by many miles, sat a small island resting on the fringe of the cruise ship routes. This island was far enough away to be mostly ignored by the cruise ships, but close enough to keep Clifton in business, running a charter boat service between all the small uncharted islands in the surrounding backwater.
So, it was no surprise that Clifton and his girlfriend, Shauna, along with their everyman Nate, found an excited young man, Josh Forkner, in their offices along the beach at Rum Cay. He had been animatedly explaining what he needed their services for, for the last couple of hours.
Arms flailing in a descriptive style, he paced back and forth in the small office of the reedy palm‐roofed hut, holding his audience captive.
Look, we’ve got work to do. If you don’t mind, I’d like to get on with it. We’ve been sitting here for three hours talking about it. All I’d like to do is say yes or no.
he was saying.
Behind the counter used to greet guests and future charter boat clients, Clifton leaned. He was scruffy in a rugged sort of way, lean and built like a steel girder. Beside him stood the love of his life, Shauna. If Clifton was lean and scruffy, Shauna was the image of an porcelain doll, right down to the heart‐shaped red lipstick. His world revolved around her. He never made any decisions without her. In front of Josh Forkner, this was no different.
What’ll I say Shauna, yes or no?
he drawled, laid back to a fault.
Well, I like it. It’s a thing I’ve always wanted to do.
She batted long black eyelashes at her beau.
Their man Nate, sweeping up the wood floor in front of the entranceway, stopped and leaned on his broom, his old and grizzled face pinched in concern. If you want my opinion, Mr. Clifton...?
he rasped.
Clifton looked lazily over at Nate. Sure.
I’ve heard stories like this before. Spanish gold. Nothing ever happens. Down in the barrio, secret treasure maps get sold all day long. I know the man who draws them.
Nate shook his head and went back to his broom, dust clouds forming swirling eddies of powdered dirt in the air.
Clifton turned just as lazily back to Josh. The man just made a point, Josh.
Josh stopped, on the verge of exasperation. "I beg your pardon, then, and yours too, because I’m not making myself clear. Look, I have nothing so tangible as a map. All I have is this knowledge that on the Island in Buccaneer’s Cay, there
