RANDOM THINGS is a collection of three pieces of short fiction of romance, fantasy, and human relationships.
“On the Subject of Kindness” follows Hank, a long-haul truck driver often on the road, with an empty nest and lonely wife. He expects to find nothing more than a greasy meal when he pulls into a truck stop, but he finds a young girl shivering in the rain and clearly hungry. Faced with a child in such an awful situation, Hank has to decide how far he’s willing to go to help a girl in need.
“An Old-Fashioned Courtship” begins with Layla arriving home to find a wonderfully wrapped and intriguing package on her doorstep. She knows that not all that glitters is gold, however. The mundane world of a twenty-something intersects with that of the Fae, and all choices must be carefully made.
“High Corn” explores the desires, dreams, and relationships of Marlene, a dissatisfied housewife in Depression-era Arkansas. Born from a once wealthy family that turned to dirt farming to survive, Marlene reflects on the farm where her children were born and raised. Knowing she has nothing left but the dirt and drought, Marlene turns to the farm-hand Earl, who has become both friend and lover, as she seeks a life beyond the sun-faded house and her farm-blinded husband.
