THICK WHITE SMOKE ROSE from the chimney of the abandoned hut for the first time in many years, snaking into the night sky and obscuring the constellations overhead. Inside, moans of pleasure drowned the night sounds as the man and woman before the fire quenched the passion that had burned inside them for days. The weak flames were no match to their desire, for they were kindred souls locked in an embrace of lust too long delayed.

The door crashed outward. Two figures leaped through the opening, their movements so quick the eye could hardly register them. The woman, whose name was Kadira, preceded the man, who was known as Nguvu the Bone-Breaker.

Kadira veered slightly to the side to allow Nguvu enough room to maneuver. In the same motion, she whirled, sword held outward. The point of the blade sliced
