About this ebook
Growing up a human slave to an Elvish lord, Lera has been abused all her life. She has no illusions about her life, but she knows that escape is impossible. She can’t speak the human language, and she’s never been off her master’s estate. Every other slave in the household is a human, and they’ve all got the same problems that make a better life seem out of reach.
However, Lera’s got one thing that no other humans has- magic.
When the estate is attacked, Lera finds herself face to face with Aeron, a Fae warrior trying to get home. He’s critically injured, and she hides him in a barn cellar. Using her magic to heal him, Lera convinces Aeron to bring her with him across the Stoneless Wall- the barrier between the Elf and Fae countries.
But Aeron also has his own secrets, and Lera is part of them.

About the Author
Chapter 1:
Lera
Cold stone sent shocks up my legs, and I clenched my broom hard against the wind that funneled through the stable. The horses, safe and warm in their pens, rustled quietly, and the swish of husk against marble echoed off the high roof. Grinding my teeth against the shivers that lodged between my shoulder blades, I shook myself hard before pausing to look around.
This stable was lavish, but the stench of manure and animals permeated the entire place and for yards around it. Gold plaques clung to the stall doors, naming each beast in beautiful script. Just one of those plaques would buy my freedom…
Shaking my head viciously at the thought, I gulped down the dense lump that formed in my throat. Goosebumps washed my flesh as images flashed in my mind’s eye, and I blinked hard. A few hours of freedom wasn’t worth dying when I was caught by Grams’ men. I couldn’t take a horse, after all, and the weather outside constantly worsened.
A soft whinny stole my attention, as if the beast closest to me could sense my thoughts, and I twisted. A small smile stretched my lips, and Honorable hung his head out of his stall with pleading, deep eyes. Glancing around cautiously, I sucked in a short, cold breath before shuffling over to pet his head. He knickered happily, leaning into my touch, and my smile strengthened as I exhaled through flared nostrils.
I would take you if I could- you’re my favorite, you know, Honorable.
The huge, one-ton animal bopped his head- as if he was nodding in agreement- and I sighed in this short moment of content. Stroking him down his neck, I swished my broom against the quiet of animals settling in for the night. One day, maybe…
Reluctance weighed down my strides, and Honorable snorted as regret soured my tongue. The other horses minded their own, munching or dozing or thinking whatever it was that horses thought. Longing welled in my chest, but, even then, I knew that being a beast wouldn’t solve my problems. We were all abused, just in different ways.
Shuffling around as I swept, I flexed my hands around my broom and pursed my lips. Humans- horses- fae- dwarves… Elves… My lips dragged down sharply, and I glanced over my shoulder at the entrance to the large barn. No one appeared; it was dinner time at the mansion, and my master didn’t enjoy tormenting me so much as to anger his wife. A dark shiver rattled my spine, and my throat tightened before I shook my head sharply.
Brushing the dull stone in silence, I made my way across the barn slowly. The twilight beyond the open doors grew darker and darker with each passing minute, and the breeze steadily turned sharp. Winter was coming early, and I set my broom by the door to glance down at myself from under furrowed brows.
My frock stained and reeked of horses, it’s once ugly, green color faded into an even more ugly brown. The fabric patched in places and didn’t reach my knees, but I knew that I wouldn’t get anything else unless it was completely ruined.
Even then, there was a chance that my master wouldn’t give me something to wear. Disgust pockmarked my skin, and I shivered with a sourness coating my tongue.
