Connecting with Radiance
Jerusalem, 2003
The crisp, chilly, early morning winds whipped through white stone corridors and alleyways as I walked with determination toward an old building, home to a collection of spiritual books.
I was twenty-three years old, newly married. My husband and I had ventured across the globe to delve into the world of ancient spirituality and seek out truth. My quest for answers had, so far, only yielded more questions, and I continued to search.
Arriving in Jerusalem, I knew that the answers were not far off. Yet it felt as though they were hiding in the crevices between the ancient stones, and that in order to access them, I’d need to do some strategic digging.
During my first weeks, while visiting learning institutions where I had the opportunity to ask my most pressing question, I was left feeling fractured by the details of how to practice what, and which way, and according to whom.
Where is my place in this world?
I asked, as I knew, deep within, that spirituality could help me connect more deeply to all of life… if only I could figure out how to practice it in sincerity.
Growing up, my happy place had always been a book shop. With a cappuccino in one hand and a book in the other, most weekends found me engrossed in myriad books about spirituality and personal growth. First, it was Barnes and Noble. Next, it was a part-time job in high school working at a psychic bookstore, researching the deeper world, and quelling my inner skeptic while secretly wondering if the psychics could read my mind. Next, it was the university library for an exploration of world culture, sociology, religion, and philosophy.
On this particular morning, my journey had led me into a Jerusalem institute of spiritual learning and its library of ancient books. Perusing a collection stretched floor to ceiling, I brushed up against a shelf, and one book broke loose and cascaded down onto my head. With light blue skies and wispy clouds, the cover drew me in.
Awestruck, I opened it and began to read.
Within moments, a young woman rushed through the door. Hair blown by the wind, she looked as if she had just run a marathon. There is an older woman who needs assistance,
she announced. She just had surgery and she’s alone in her home until her children arrive from the States.
Within many of Jerusalem’s institutes of learning, you will find a three-pronged focus for spiritual growth: learning, prayer, and performing acts of kindness. When a neighbor is in need, students mobilize to volunteer. I’ll go,
I answered, and gently closed the book. What’s her name? Where does she live?
Ruchoma Shain, two streets south.
As she answered, I glanced down at the book in my hands and realized that the author of my book was this very same woman in need of help. I rushed out the door.
There are certain moments in life that feel completely outside of the laws of nature. In moments such as these, when people meet, and lives collide, one begins to wonder about the chances of these occurrences taking place. The chances seem so slim that they border the impossible. What were the chances of that one book falling from its shelf?
That moment, sixteen years ago, was a distinct coincidence of time and space.
It was a moment that led me to a warm, caring teacher who had amassed a lifetime of experience and was delighted to share her wisdom with me. She was able to shine a light on the answers to some of my deepest questions: Why are we here?
How can we create a joyful, vibrant, and meaningful life?
It was a moment, which in fact, led me to many more ‘coincidences’ of its kind.
As has been said, when the student is ready, the teacher appears.
During my time in Jerusalem, I began to discover wellsprings of deep ancient wisdom: how and where to find truth, how to feel spiritually connected, and how to imbue or find purpose in the present moment. This exploration was an introduction to a prolific world of ancient spirituality. Its teachings hold the keys to Oneness with all of life.
In this book, I will share my journey with you, along with insights and ideas that I’ve been collecting along the way. Perhaps you are reading this book to learn more about an ancient type of spiritual, personal, and collective development. Or, perhaps you are hoping to further transcend the aches and pains of daily living. You have heard the whispers of your soul, and you are listening intently.
What is it that you would like to learn or receive from a collection of ancient insights and soul-stirring stories? If your soul could speak to you, what might it say? This book was written for you. It is an opportunity to tune in with your most authentic self and to answer the calling of your soul by channeling spirituality into being by way of your thoughts, words, and acts. My journey led to the universe of Torah.
