The Secret Monolith

The final pieces are nearly in place, said the LabCoat who was standing nearby. Her fastidious dedication to enunciating each stage of the construction process was reassuring to the foreman. The enormous object before them, a monolith of steel, filled with all the latest technology, radiated with a cold that refrigerated the massive dome in which they stood.

The dome was the largest construction ever built by the species, a hashing of girders that criss-crossed from the ground, curving ever-upward to a ceiling that seemed leagues away. Foreman and LabCoat stood upon a gantry that was suspended at a height halfway up the monolith in the centre of the dome, allowing them a vantage point from which they
