    Jimmy’s Spook

    By David F Eastman

Jimmy, being the little brat he was and again defying his father’s second angry outburst to go to your room now, young man! went to his room, sat on his bed and pouted. He was good at the art of pouting—his jaw clenched, his lips shut and pushed out, his eyes squinted, his hands fisted—but it wasn’t much fun in the dark with no one to see him. Pouting, Jimmy had learned over his 8 years of life, needed an audience or it simply did not work.

When his sister Betsy pouted, his dad or his mom—more often his dad who was the default disciplinarian in the house because his mom’s heart was too big and too kind—would see his sweet little girl pouting and crying and then, feeling like it probably was his fault and not hers, would go over to her, kiss her on the forehead and say, please don’t cry, sweetie! and then forgive her with a big hug.

Jimmy never got a kiss on the forehead or forgiven mostly because he made it worse after his dad would yell stop! and whatever bad or evil thing he was doing to piss off his dad, he would do it again just to spite him. Hells fire, that is why Jimmy was a brat and maybe even a little snot!

So acting like a brat or pouting, Jimmy was condemned by his dad and sent to his bedroom. Fortunately for Jimmy, he loved his bedroom which he had spent many hours turning into a wonderful and fun place for a brat to spend his jail time. His room was smaller than his sister’s room which was pink and frilly and fluffy and filled with all sorts of fufu dollies and silly stuffed animals. It was apparent to Jimmy that his sister was a fancy, sissy, girly-girl and his parents loved her the most. Jimmy didn’t care, not one bit.

Jimmy’s room was just the opposite of Betsy’s. He had talked his dad into painting the whole room an almost midnight blue. After his dad painted the ceiling, he bought Jimmy a star constellation projector from the gift shop at the local innovation museum and planetarium and used it to project starry night images up on the ceiling, like stars, moons, suns, and constellations, then painted them with glow-in-the-dark paint. If Jimmy left his bedroom light on long enough, and then shut it off to go to sleep, the stars and the moons and the suns and the constellations would glow in the dark and shine down on him as he lay in his bed looking up.
