Excerpt from the book:
Not only was it all done by a single person, this person also happened to be a highly educated historian. Many other academics knew of him, who mostly studied the folklore and history of the Celts along with linguistics and languages. His personal library contained numerous academic documents, and a large and intriguing doll collection.
The investigators of the case found 26 corpses of young females between the ages of 10 and 25. The man was also accused of desecrating over 150 graves.
The corpses looked like real dolls and were mummified. Not only did he dress and put wigs on them, he also applied wax and makeup to their dead faces. He would then throw parties for the corpses that he referred to as his "girls." An even more macabre touch was that he would put music boxes inside the rib cages of some of the more beloved dolls.

Horror Anthology - ANN GAIMAN
Introduction
If you’re like me, you love a good horror story. If the horror story is true, it’s even better. Why do we do this to ourselves? I get a rush from being a little scared, and the thought that something like this could actually happen brings the fright
level up about ten notches. I’ve enjoyed hearing terrifying – and true – horror stories since I was a kid. Growing up, it seemed they’re around every corner. I have carefully selected nineteen lesser-known true horror stories that occurred through history. I started the collection with a true story about a serial killer living his life as a Deputy in Florida, and an evil tree that refused to be cut down. I will tell you about a real road in New Jersey called Shades of Death
, where locals and visitors have seen things they can’t explain. The third story of the collection takes us down to the Florida Keys, where Carl Tanzler, otherwise known as Count Carl von Cosel, wouldn’t let a little thing like death keep him away from his beloved.
In Dover, Massachusetts, we meet the legendary Dover Demon, who local teenagers swore they witnessed on an April night in the late 70s. While we are visiting Massachusetts–what I find to be the creepiest state in America, we will meet a real-life monster and murderess named Jolly Jane. Afterwards, we will take a trip up north to Vermont, where five unrelated people went mysteriously missing during the years of 1945-1950 in what is now called the Bennington Triangle
. Finally, while staying in the mountains, we will take a trip to the former USSR, where nine college students went missing during a hiking adventure. The hikers were found but what happened to them is still a mystery today.
Chapter 1: Alturas in the Woods
My friend Sam and I were no strangers to the ‘bush’, the wild country of Australia. So, without a second thought the two of us would go bushwalking outside of the Australian state of New South Wales, an area known for its beautiful coastal views and scenic national parks.
One day, we decided to veer off the usual path and explore deeper into the backcountry. Somewhere along the way, we came upon a strange, raised platform made from rocks stacked together.
The platform was definitely man-made, and we lingered around wondering what the heck this thing was. Who could have made it? And for what purpose? Was it meant to be a bench or a table? Did it have some sort of spiritual or religious significance? With no real answers, we shrugged it off and continued our hike.
Later that year, I was going about my business when something on the news caught my attention. It was a platform that greatly resembled the one we encountered on our hike, only it was discovered in a different part of the bush. My curiosity was piqued, I sat down to watch the rest of the news. The news highlighted several other similar structures discovered throughout the New South Wales region, and sure enough, there was an aerial photograph of the very same platform I had come across while on my hike with Sam.
The rest of the news segment sent chills down my spine.
The platform was linked to a man known as Ivan Milat, a man whom the Australian media had famously dubbed the worst killer in the nation’s history. Milat had been the prime suspect in the sensational ‘backpacker murders’, a spate of brutal serial killings that claimed the lives of seven hikers possibly more.
The first victims were discovered in 1992 and eventually identified as British backpackers Caroline Clarke and Joanne Walters, their badly decomposed bodies were simply left to rot somewhere deep within the Belanglo State Forest. One of the victims, Joanne Walters, had been stabbed 14 times. The other victim, Caroline Clark, had been shot 10 times in the head—the police believed her murderer may have used her as target practice.
The third and fourth bodies were discovered nearly a year later. The remains of Deborah Everest and James Gibson showed signs of stab wounds and deep cuts caused by a large knife, along with multiple fractures and bruising from savage beatings.
The fifth, sixth and seventh discoveries bore similar signs of abuse, multiple stab wounds, gunshots, mutilations, and decapitation.
Based on the presence of shell casings discovered near the bodies at the campsites, and the extent of injuries inflicted on them post-mortem, police investigation revealed that the killer, or killers, had spent considerable time with their victims both during and after the murders. Speculation arose that the crimes were the grisly handiwork of several killers, at least two, and Ivan Milat’s sworn statement suggested that he may have collaborated with up to seven others to carry out the murders. Also, present near the crime scenes were the strange platforms, or ‘altars’, often located no more than 300 yards from the victim’s final resting places. Only Ivan Milat was ever arrested and convicted of the murders of the seven victims, though they believe he may have been responsible for many more. To this day, the identities and whereabouts of Milat’s possible accomplices remain uncertain.
Chapter 2: The Whistling Marine
My girlfriend Jodie and I were taking a road trip along the scenic west coast of North America. Along the way, we drove through a campsite just outside of a major city in California. Upon seeing our campsite, it looked relatively empty, so we decided to spend at least a few nights there. All along our trip, we had stayed in motels or slept in our car and felt that a night away from the hustle and bustle of town and highway traffic would be most welcome. So, we picked a location away from other campers and we were delighted at the space and privacy we all had to ourselves.
Worn from the day’s drive, my girlfriend and I decided to make our first night at the campground an early one. After cooking up a hearty dinner and enjoying a few beers, we climbed into our tent and went to bed by about 9:00 pm. I remember having a strange uneasiness that kept me awake, but after tossing and turning for a while, I eventually fell asleep.
It was pitch black when we’re suddenly awakened by what sounded like someone whistling outside of our tent. Disoriented, we took a while to recognize the tune as that of ‘When the Saints Come Marching In’. More than a little creeped out, we remained still in the tent, waiting and listening. The whistling did not go away. When the tune was over, whoever was whistling would repeat it again and again. After what seemed like an eternity, the whistling became creepier. The voice that carried the tune suddenly started chanting and growling. At first, we had difficulty understanding the words, but it soon became clear that whoever was making the noises was telling us that, When you sleep here, you disrespect me, and you disrespect the US Marines!
The voice then kept whistling, faster and more maniacally, interspersed with his cryptic but terrifying threats. As the tone
