Further Up the Path - Daniel Oz
The Cat’s Dream
In the cat’s dream, the gnawed fishbone regrew flesh and scales and its gills gaped as they swelled with life. The creature pricked up its fins and quickly swam upriver. By the time it reached the foot of the hill, the fish was tired and bloated, and it drifted languidly to the bank. There on the pebbles, the sunrays beat down and penetrated the shut eyelids. The cat’s whiskers twitched in his sleep under the unbearably harsh light. Little by little, the fish rotted away.
Fatigue
Imagine that I reached you in a state of fatigue, after a feverish sprint to deliver an urgent message, so breathless that I could not produce even a monosyllable. All I can offer is panting.
The Refusal
When he asked for her hand in marriage, she refused. He inquired: Why would you refuse me? You yourself have acknowledged that throughout my courtship I have conducted myself as the perfect lover. I gave you plenty, but received kindly as well. I never wooed you crassly, nor was I reserved or restrained. Since the day we first met, I have neither committed a folly nor let slip any blunder. Replied she: That is why.
Untitled
His parents could not come up with a name for him. When his father lay on his deathbed, the son sat by his side with the father’s hand in his own. The father, fatigued from his ailments, furrowed his brow as if straining to think. The son said: Enough, Father. I have called you nothing but Father
my whole life. I am content to have been Son
to you. And He, too, will undoubtedly forgive you, for He also has no name.
The Freezing Piano
Due to a heating malfunction, the pianist’s hands freeze and she threads them between her thighs and wizens. Her teeth chatter and the wooden floor faintly echoes the judder of her feet. From time to time her audience, its attention growing increasingly lax, accompanies her with a sneeze.
He Who Died in His Sleep
Fell asleep and never awoke. In the afterworld, he asked the guards whether he had died in his sleep. They replied: What difference does it make? You’re dreaming anyway.
