Introduction
In 2013 I wrote and published WordPress for Beginners: The Easy Step-by-Step Guide to Creating a Website with WordPress. Since then the WordPress platform and the internet have changed a lot. There have been a lot of other new website/blogging platforms that have been introduced and some have gained popularity, such as Wix and Weebly, but I still consider WordPress to be the best platform to use to create a website.
WordPress is so easy to use and it comes with so many free tools that you can use to make your site more engaging and functional. You don’t have to be a tech wiz, it’s not necessary to learn any HTML codes, and you don’t have to pay thousands of dollars to a professional web designer to make one for you. As long as you have basic knowledge of using the internet then you can build a professional-looking WordPress website.
What is WordPress?
In 2003, WordPress first started as a blogging platform where people could use it as an online diary, a portfolio, or a photo blog. But since then, WordPress has evolved into an open source content management system which you can use for almost anything you can imagine! You can choose to have a simple blog or you can build a full blown website. WordPress can be used to build an e-commerce store, a photo journal, a hobby blog, an online portfolio, or a news site.
All kinds of people use WordPress. Teachers, professionals, large corporations, authors, photographers, students and private individuals use the WordPress platform to get their message across to their readers on the World Wide Web.
WordPress offers a free hosted version (WordPress.com) which you can use to create a website, however, the free version does not allow you to install plugins and it has other limits on what you can do to design your site. The only way to gain access to the other tools is to upgrade your site to a paid version.
WordPress also offers a self-hosted version in which you can install the software on your website through either a web host or by downloading and then installing it on your own web server. However, the easiest way to install WordPress is through a web host which offers tools to automatically install the WordPress software for you, such as Fantastico or Simple Scripts. In this book, we will be focussing mainly on the self-hosted version of WordPress.
Benefits of Using WordPress
I don’t think I need to tell you all the benefits of using WordPress, but in case you need a bit more convincing, I have listed more reasons why WordPress is the best platform to use for web designing:
❖ WordPress provides a user-friendly interface which makes it easy to update your site’s content.
❖ It’s free and easy to install.
❖ You don’t need to have any complicated coding skills or know CSS to design your site.
❖ WordPress offers special tools called widgets and plugins to increase the functionality of your site.
❖ WordPress offers special templates called themes that you can
