    PART ONE

    THE PROMISE

It was a cold day but the sunshine flooded in. The freckles on my skin were like little constellations, my hands lit up by the gaps in the forest.  I remember the car was warm and my fingers were on the dash, tapping to the rhythm of the radio. There was this green, scented pine tree bouncing under the windscreen; it had a smell like used car lots and old folks homes. And there was this country song playing, some old cowboy singing about lost love:

Talk to me oh lonesome heart help me through this lonely night...

It was the autumn of our sophomore year. We were taking a road trip to Yellowstone National Park, me my best friend Lauryn. When she suggested it, I thought she was crazy; but the idea of seeing Old Faithful up close? That was too much to pass up. I’d wanted to go ever since I was a kid. We saved up the gas money a month before, both of us working as waitresses and bargirls. Soon we had the cash, so we promptly quit our so-called jobs and set off in a gleeful hurry, the streets of old Boston fading into the distance. It felt amazing; the rush was indescribable.

Lie to me and tell me everything’s alright...

We travelled all the way from Massachusetts to the Yellowstone National Park, deep in the wilderness of Wyoming. Let me tell you, that’s a real long way; it’s a distance of over 2,900 kilometers, too long for either of us to drive. So, we made the journey in two parts, spending a day at the Indiana Dunes before continuing on to Wyoming. It was a nice break, but both of us were super eager to keep going. By the time we’d reached the Grand Canyon of Yellowstone, we were exhausted and enthralled, staring up there at the giant waterfall with tears
