TALK TO ME LONESOME HEART
PART ONE
THE PROMISE
It was a cold day but the sunshine flooded in. The freckles on my skin were like little constellations, my hands lit up by the gaps in the forest. I remember the car was warm and my fingers were on the dash, tapping to the rhythm of the radio. There was this green, scented pine tree bouncing under the windscreen; it had a smell like used car lots and old folks homes. Let me tell you, that’s a real long way; it’s a distance of over 2,900 kilometers, too long for either of us to drive. So, we made the journey in two parts, spending a day at the Indiana Dunes before continuing on to Wyoming. It was a nice break, but both of us were super eager to keep going. By the time we’d reached the Grand Canyon of Yellowstone, we were exhausted and enthralled, staring up there at the giant waterfall with tears
