From Human to Transhuman Consciousness

About this ebook
In the summer of 1979, Gopi Krishna gave a series of five talks in Toronto, Canada, in which he presented the state of ‘Cosmic Consciousness’, or enlightenment, as an evolutionary development slowly but steadily taking place in the race. He clearly describes the nature of this new faculty, and outlines the various factors that are impeding its development. Most importantly, he gives clear and concise methods for what earnest spiritual seekers can do to accelerate this process in themselves.
Gopi Krishna
Gopi Krishna was born in 1903 to parents of Kashmiri Brahmin extraction. His birthplace was a small village about twenty miles from the city of Srinagar, the summer capital of the Jammu and Kashmir State in northern India. He spent the first eleven years of his life growing up in this beautiful Himalayan valley. In 1914, his family moved to the city of Lahore in the Punjab which, at that time, was a part of British India. Gopi Krishna passed the next nine years completing his public school education. Illness forced him to leave the torrid plains of the Punjab and he returned to the cooler climate of the Kashmir Valley. During the succeeding years, he secured a post in the Public Works Department of the state, married and raised a family. In 1946 he founded a social organization and with the help of a few friends tried to bring about reforms in some of the outmoded customs of his people. Their goals included the abolition of the dowry system, which subjected the families of brides to severe and even ruinous financial obligations, and the strictures against the remarriage of widows. After a few years, Gopi Krishna was granted premature retirement from his position in the government and devoted himself almost exclusively to service work in the community. In 1967, he published his first major book in India: Kundalini — The Evolutionary Energy in Man. Shortly thereafter it was published in Great Britain and the United States and has since appeared in eleven major languages. The book presented to the Western world for the first time a clear and concise autobiographical account of the phenomenon of the awakening of Kundalini, which he had experienced in 1937. This work, and the sixteen other published books by Gopi Krishna have generated a steadily growing interest in the subjects of consciousness and the evolution of the brain. He also traveled extensively in Europe and North America, energetically presenting his theories to scientists, scholars, researchers and others.Gopi Krishna’s experiences led him to hypothesize that there is a biological mechanism in the human body which is responsible for creativity, genius, psychic abilities, religious and mystical experiences, as well as some aberrant mental states. He asserted that ignorance of the working of this evolutionary mechanism was the main reason for the present dangerous state of world affairs. He called for a full scientific investigation of his hypothesis and believed that such an objective analysis would uncover the secrets of human evolution. It is this knowledge, he believed, that would give mankind the means to progress in peace and harmony.Gopi Krishna passed away in July 1984 of a severe lung infection and is survived by his three children and seven grandchildren. The work that he began is currently being carried forward through the efforts of a number of affiliated foundations, organizations and individuals around the world.

Inaugural Address
This presentation is a set of talks given by Pandit Gopi Krishna at the Second International Conference on Kundalini, held at Convocation Hall in Toronto, Canada in 1979.
My dear friends, the First International Conference on Kundalini was celebrated in Srinagar in a place on the hill, and a number of friends, more than 234, came from Canada and for about a week, we were discussing the various aspects of certain secrets of Nature which fate has decided that I should reveal. This is the Second Conference and destiny has willed that it should be held here.
I am not a teacher of meditation, nor an occultist, nor do I call myself a spiritual man. I am an ordinary human being as you are. But somehow, by a decree of fate, I was involved in an inner process which lasted for more than 35 years and is still active. And this process and this change has given into my hands a secret which is still unknown to modern science. And this secret relates to the brain.
According to modern versions, the human brain is the most complex organism in the universe. In the neo-cortex alone, there are about twelve billion neurons and these neurons interact with other neurons, and each neuron is interconnected with others by as many as one thousand to ten thousand fibrils or synapses.
If we were to have a computer which would work in the same way as our brain does, it would occupy many acres of land. It is said that the combinations and permutations of which the brain is capable—a normal human brain—exceed in number the total number of atoms in the universe. We never wonder at what we have. This is the most wonderful, the most ingenious, and the most complex instrument in the universe.
We take it for granted because it comes to us as a gift. But once anything is lost in it, no human skill can replace that. And what I have to say relates to this marvelous instrument which controls our body, which controls the world, which has given us all the science and technology, knowledge, poetry, music we possess at present. But since it is our own property, we are never surprised at it, though it is a most marvelous instrument that we have.
Since what I have to reveal is connected with my own life, I would request most humbly that what I say should not be ascribed to any pride or arrogance. There is no pride, no ego, no arrogance for one who has seen even one glimpse of the transcendental, who has even on one occasion beheld the Divine.
We know that throughout the past there have been born, from time to time, individuals of the highest mental caliber. And the most influential of them have been the prophets. For instance, we know what influence Christ had on the Western world. He has been worshiped by millions upon millions of people, generation after generation, for the last 2,000 years. There is no other human being, no king, no emperor, no writer, no poet, no composer who has equaled the esteem, the reverence, and the homage that has been paid to Christ.
Similarly, in the Islamic world, Mohammed has reigned supreme and is even now commanding the homage, reverence and worship of millions upon millions of human beings. Similarly, in India, there have been Vyasa, Shankaracharya—great prophets and sages, and more recently, Guru Nanak, who have commanded the veneration of millions of people.
We have no explanation for these extraordinary individuals. Modern skeptical scholars have dismissed this phenomenon as something which is not worth even investigation. They never went into the problem, by what psychological reason these few individuals commanded and still command the greatest reverence in the whole world. It is a phenomenon which is before our eyes. But what is the reason behind it?
We have had, during the recent centuries, great scientists like Darwin, like Newton, even like Einstein, and others. But they have not been able to command even one tithe of the homage and reverence that has fallen to the share of these illuminated human beings. They were simple, sometimes even half-educated, even uneducated, like Mohammed. And yet, every word that they have written is being read by millions of people with great devotion. We have not understood this phenomenon because we are ignorant about the brain.
Apart from these religious geniuses, we have now the secular geniuses—great musicians, great poets, great philosophers, great scientists. And in all these cases, we find that they had a brain with which even a thousand brains could not compete, even a million brains could not have that insight, that power, that knowledge and those flashes which they had. Wherefrom did they get that wisdom, that knowledge and that insight? We know nothing of it.
These two categories of human being—the geniuses and the prophets—whatever we possess, this electricity, this microfilm, the construction of this hall, everything that we possess and own in our houses is from their brain, from their intellect, from their knowledge. All the other world is just using what these few great souls gave to mankind. So we have had these two classes of human beings—the prophets on the one side who talked about the spirit, about moral laws, about the purpose of human life, about how we should live, how we should behave, on the one side, and geniuses who gave us all the knowledge, all the wisdom, and all the discoveries to tell us how to live in comfort and in happiness. And both these two classes of human beings had a special brain which is not known to science.
Therefore, for the first time, based on my own experience, extending now to more than forty years, I am in a position, I don’t say it out of pride, as I have already indicated, because this is a gift to me. Whatever happened, happened by Grace. I am nowhere. I am able to give these two secrets to mankind.
We already have scientists in different places investigating on the lines I have suggested. We have scientists in Bombay, in Madras, in Allahabad, in Calcutta, in Delhi, in Toronto in the Kundalini Research Institute under Dr. Kason, in Starnberg, Germany, and we are also trying for a scientific unit in London. Because it is this secret of the brain which is of the utmost importance for mankind at this time when, with all the harvest of technology on one side, all the brilliant achievements of science on the one side, and a disaster on the other. Mankind is hanging by a slender thread and needs this secret to determine her future course of action according to the Divine laws.
In order to explain to you what has brought these two classes of human beings into existence, I would like to say a few words about our mind. As you know, we have five senses—eyes, ears, nose, tongue and the body, and our mind, our reason, our intellect which analyzes the impressions brought by the senses. All our world is derived from the impressions which we receive from these five senses and which are coordinated, analyzed by our intellect.
We have no awareness, our modern science and our modern scholars have no awareness that a Sixth Sense is developing in the human brain. That is the tragedy of our time. And all the great prophets who have arisen, from Buddha to Christ to Mohammed to Guru Nanak, they have all referred to this newly developing sense in the human race. We cannot stop its development, and this sense has been very prominent in these two classes of human beings about whom I have been speaking.
Our five senses and our mind tell us only a very small bit about the universe. Our senses are very limited. Animals, even insects, have much more powerful senses. For instance, a moth, a certain kind of moth can detect its mate by scent from eleven kilometers, just by scent. And bees can find their way by polarized light, which we can never do. Migratory birds travel five, six thousand miles unerringly, guided by a sense about which we know nothing.
But this Sixth Sense in man, which is developing, is something quite different. It has been variously described as the Third Eye of Shiva, the Sixth Sense, another, rebirth by Christ, the Tenth Door by Guru Nanak, as nirvana by Buddha. It is an actual organic sense that is developing in mankind, and the tragedy is we are unaware of it.
I have already discussed with many scientists—hundreds, and I boldly say to them that the human brain is still evolving organically, to reach this other sense which we call the Third Eye or the Sixth Sense, and that all the geniuses and all the prophets who have been born had this Sixth Sense naturally awake in them. They are but the forerunners of the future man.
Most of you are interested in Yoga, in meditation, some in psychic phenomena, some in magic, some in occultism, some in religion. Why? What drives you to it? Why have you this desire? Has any psychologist answered this question? Why should we have this desire at all? And why are some of you, day and night, seeking books, spiritual teachers. They are reading in newspapers to have some news about it. They are reading old books. Some of them go to India or other places to find teachers and masters. Why this urge? What has it got to do with us? We have now everything we need. We can travel around the earth maybe in eight or ten hours. We can reach the Moon. We have everything to eat.
Our ancestors never had one tithe of it. Even the kings of olden days did not have these comforts, what we have. But why are we now even more impatient than before, more eager than before for this spiritual knowledge? What drives us?
To answer your question I should say that just as an adolescent, boy or girl, is
