I have always enjoyed reading science fiction and mysteries because I am interested in future science and puzzle solving. I write about stories of the future that mimic today's social issues. Issues such as greed, retribution, prejudice, political corruption, and what the future could become are some of the concepts I use to illustrate a moral result. What motivates me? A story I may read in the newspaper, political idiocy, a situation that happened in history, or just anything that I can twist the perspective around. I travel the west with my husband and read about the small towns of the USA as we drive through them.

    The Lost Jewel

When Count Gawain fought against the Saxon’s and viewed the death of his enemies, he wasn’t prepared when his wife took ill. She bore him a daughter they named Katheryn. Poppa? she asked him.

I will take care of you, my dear, he replied and turned away before she could see the tears trying to escape his eyelids.

The bed ridden woman whispered. He drew closer to hear his wife’s last breath.

Katheryn–take care of her, her voice wavered . Take my jewels and keep them safe for her."

He removed her necklace, the one he obtained to secure his lands. Now he would trade a hundred of these jewels to prevent his wife from dying. He placed the sparkling strand on the nightstand beside her bed.

The local doctor bent over the Count’s wife and checked her breathing with a small mirror. He looked up at the ruler and shook his head.

Saddened, Count Gawain placed his hands on Katheryn’s shoulders and guided her away toward the bedroom door.

Momma! his daughter cried and tried to pull away from him.

He bent down on one knee to look her in her wet eyes. Holding onto her shoulders to keep her attention, he spoke with care.

No, she has gone to Heaven. We have to go now, he told her.

    Katheryn cried louder.

The count led his daughter to the servant woman, standing near the doorway. The woman had cared for his wife these past weeks.

Please take Katheryn back to her room, he said to the servant. He placed his daughter’s small hand into the woman’s outstretched arms. Once they both left the room, he turned toward his wife’s deathbed. Bending down on his knees, he watched the doctor excuse himself to a far wall.

He cried as he never cried for anyone before. Death always struck his enemies, not those he loved. He placed his
