About this ebook

It can be hard for busy professionals to find the time to read the latest books. Stay up to date in a fraction of the time with this concise guide.

Capitalism and Freedom outlines the Nobel Prize-winning economist Milton Friedman’s views on the relationship between economics and politics. Specifically, he believes that economic freedom is necessary both in and of itself, and because it is inextricably linked to political freedom. He applies this insight to a host of contemporary problems to argue that the situation could be improved by what he refers to as “competitive capitalism”. Capitalism and Freedom has sold hundreds of thousands of copies since it was first published in 1962, and was described by The Times Literary Supplement as “one of the most influential books published since the war”. Friedman himself was one of the most influential economists of the 20th century, and his ideas have been adopted by governments around the world.

This book review and analysis is perfect for:
• Students of economics and politics
• Anyone with an interest in the history of economic thought
• Anyone looking to understand the role of the government in the economy

    CAPITALISM AND FREEDOM

A CASE FOR COMPETITIVE CAPITALISM AS THE MOST DESIRABLE SOCIETAL ARRANGEMENT

In Capitalism and Freedom, the Nobel Prize-winning economist Milton Friedman outlines his views on the relationship between economics and politics. Contrary to popular opinion, Friedman claims that these two fields are intertwined and offers a conceptual framework, dubbed competitive capitalism, which sees the idea of freedom as not solely belonging to the political sphere, but to the economic sphere as well. Moreover, apart from being a valuable end in and of itself, economic freedom precedes political freedom:

… freedom in economic arrangements is itself a component of freedom broadly understood, so economic freedom is an end in itself. In the second place, economic freedom is also an indispensable means toward the achievement of political freedom. (p. 8)

After discussing the framework itself in the first two chapters, he goes on to apply it to a host of issues, each chapter detailing one separate area in which he discusses the current problems and how they could be improved through reform along competitive capitalist lines.
