The name Forbes comes from the lands of Donside, the southern part of the Pictish kingdom. It comes from the Gaelic word Forba, meaning field. Forbeses were known as the Forbais. A charter was given to the family by King Alexander III who died in 1286. Duncan Forbes was one of the first. Sir Alexander Forbes (above) married a granddaughter of King Robert III.
