- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5I love this book - it reminds me of my own grandmother, who was very like this little girl's great-grandmother.
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5Great-grandmother Nell lives with a young girl`s family. She has a hard time getting to know her because she is scary. She will not tolerate being called ``grandma``, does not want to be kissed, and does not want the children to play in her room or touch her things. The young girl talks to her about her life and what she remembers. She hears about what it was like growing up a black girl and young woman during the early years when they were trying to get rights and freedoms that should have been theirs. She also talks about her heart being broken, first by her friend who was not longer allowed to be her friend because of her skin colour. This book is very subtle, but powerful in getting across the message about prejudice and discrimination as well as the power of love.
The illustrations in this book matched the text beautifully. They were colourful and the expressions on the faces were amazing.
I received a copy of this book from Netgalley in exchange for an honest review.
