Introduction
Since ancient times, faithful followers of Jesus have found following in his Good Friday steps a meaningful and spiritually enriching devotional practice. To be able to do so in Jerusalem was an honor of such magnitude that the perils of travel from far northern European locations were not thought too high a price to pay. But since not everyone could afford the time nor the expense of such a trip, local parishes began setting up the pathway to the cross within their own worship spaces. Then the faithful could recall and give thanks for the journey that Christ made on behalf of all humanity to the cross on that final Friday of his earthly life. Evidence of such stations
can be traced to the Franciscans, who most likely set up their original stations outdoors for local Lenten devotions.
Station 8, Jesus dies on the Cross
