About this ebook
Jacob Arminius was a Dutch theologian whose views have become the basis of Arminianism and the Dutch Remonstrant movement, and are quite influential on Wesleyan, and therefore Methodist, theology as well. Arminius attempted to reform Reformed theology and ended up lending his name to a movement that resisted some of the primary tenets of Calvinism. Rustin E. Brian outlines the life and theology of Arminius, shedding fresh light on his life, theology, and writings. In hopes of better understanding Arminian theology and Arminianism, Brian concludes with a constructive comparison and contrast of Arminius and several prominent theological figures: Pelagius, John Wesley, and Karl Barth.

- Rating: 3 out of 5 stars3/5Surface level introduction to Arminius’ life and theology and how it developed.
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5This is an excellent introduction to Arminius and his theology, especially as it is examined in connection with Pelagius, John Wesley, and Karl Barth.Brian introduces Arminius and his theology in his brief, only 110 pages, but enlightening review in three parts. In part one, Brian reviews Arminius' early life and his pastoral and academic career. He seems to emphasize that the tragic events in Arminius' life ought to be kept in mind when attempting to understand his theological views. In the second part, Brian discusses Arminius' method of interpreting Scripture and his theology respecting Christ, the trinity, grace, predestination and election. In the third part, Arminius' theology is compared to Pelagius, Wesley, and, what I found to be the most interesting part of this little book, Karl Barth.Brian's concluding remarks asks the question "What does it mean to be an 'Arminian' today?"This book would also serve well, and I would encourage it, as a group study since Brian provides questions for discussion after each chapter. And, although it is a short book, Brian gives the essential and important aspects of Arminius' life and theology and does an excellent comparison with other the other theologians with which he engages. His bibliography at the end is thorough and excellent for further study. If you are one who is new to Arminius' theology, this is the best place to start. And, if you only heard a bit about Arminius, you might be surprised to discover that what you've been told about Arminius' theology has not be entirely accurate.
