About this ebook
From the author of Secret Lives of Second Wives: “a can’t-put-it-down novel . . . for every woman who’s had to mend a broken heart and get even” (Redbook).
Newly separated from her lawyer husband, Caroline James heads to the spa for a makeover and a massage, looking for a tonic to her battered pride. Instead she encounters Eleanor Hampton, the ex-wife of her spouse’s law partner, a woman so bitter she makes Medea look like Anne of Green Gables. Watch your back, Eleanor tells her. You won’t believe the stuff they’ve pulled.
When Eleanor turns up suspiciously dead in her hot tub, Caroline opens the Pandora’s Box of documents the vengeful socialite has sent as proof of the firm’s unscrupulous divorce tactics. Between fighting her divorce proceedings, raising two children, and mending her broken heart, Caroline sleuths her way through upscale La Jolla, California, to unravel the truth. For the first time in a long time, she feels truly alive, if only she can stay that way . . .

- Rating: 3 out of 5 stars3/5This was was quite a dark book. While I was rooting for everything to turn out for the best I didn't really like any of the characters in the book. Self absorbed, dismissive, any woman who dared challenge the status quo was paranoid, the men were all bullies at best. In short this was a very this privileged white-bread world. Things don't really get going until the second half of the book- the first half mostly seems dedicated to how "horrible Elanor is". Caroline's motivations are very unclear and why don't these women have any friends. It's a Stepford wives' nightmare- and the ending was just a little too pat.
- Rating: 3 out of 5 stars3/5A pretty sour look at the lives of the upper middle-class as represented by the lawyers in a Southern California city. I have given the book away already, and so details of plot are skimpy. A woman in her late forties is faced with divorce and her attorney husband is using all the lawyerly intimidation techniques on her to give her as small a settlement as possible. The mystery comes about as another ex-wife of one of the partners is found dead.I actually didn't hate this as much as I thought I would, although the lead character made some really stupid choices and did some highly improbable things to move the plot along. The characters were engaging enough that I wanted to know how it resolved. I can't say I found this "Sassy, Irreverent and Smart" as one of the quotes on the back of the book said, but it was a good story of mild suspense, with quite a few literary references. It made me happy for the life I've led with the man I've shared it with. Possessions, power and upward-mobility have never been our thing. This would be a good beach read or sitting in the waiting room or on an airplane if you need it. Not taxing to the brain, but an interesting ride.
