About this ebook

Julia Westen was a divinity with no responsibilities. She doesn’t need to know anyone, but one night she decided to meet some of her people who are alone in the Los Angeles nights. Everyone recognized her, and some even managed to almost remember her name, but no one knew her. This never bothered her. It was simply a truth she knew about herself. What she was really curious about were the truths individuals carry.

In a handful of nights, Julia met a few people in different parts of society. While with them, she considered what she knew and all the problems she was unsure of. What better time to ponder than the special time at night when dreams are more real than reality?

    Pantheon de Los Angeles

Julia entered the coffee shop at the moment between hours. She heard a rare quiet—wonderment—of people realizing they forgot themselves.

The baristas outnumbered the two customers who stared deeply into the world beyond their laptop screens. These were her people, but they could be mistaken for Scar’s. Here, on her first visit to this coffee shop near the concrete river, Julia flaunted in her simplest, immortal way: she called every barista and customer by name as she greeted them: Luis, Stella (Estela), Andrew (whose birth name was Guanzhong), Clayton, Mary, Chelsea, and Samantha.

She saw recognition in their eyes. Brief horror and shame shuffled behind the realization of not knowing her name. No one dared ask Julia for it. She was an intimate friend, so how could they have forgotten her? Everyone was waiting for anyone else to say her name.

Hey, good to see you, said Andrew. How’ve you been?

Julia came up to the register and pretended to decide on what to order.
