Winds of War: A Rayden Valkyrie Tale
()
About this ebook
The winds of war are stirring.
The kings of Thrakkia and Samosia quarrel with each other as a wave of invaders from a powerful empire crashes upon the shores of the nearby Kingdom of Pargemon.
Having finished a harrowing mission aiding the Thrakkians deep in their mountains, Rayden Valkyrie understands the looming, perilous threat from the Astrian Empire. Without unity, none of the Griacan kingdoms stand a chance against the much larger invasion that Rayden knows will follow the conquest of Pargemon.
With time dwindling fast and the kings set on a course to weaken each other in battle, Rayden undertakes a bold mission. The fate of many lands hangs in the balance
Winds of War is a stand-alone novella that is part of the Rayden Valkyrie Tales.

Winds of War
This enemy will be like a great wave from the ocean,
Rayden stated, glaring at the cluster of armed men gathered before her. It will wash away everything that you are. Yet you continue to fight amongst yourselves. You continue to weaken yourselves. You do not know what is coming!
Disgust thick in her voice, Rayden found it hard to comprehend the foolishness pervading a land facing an imminent, existential threat. An array of small kingdoms remained divided and at conflict with each other, while a massive empire to the east salivated, preparing to gorge itself upon the morsels spread before it; one by one.
Boggling Rayden’s mind further, the men before her would stand with their king in just three days time against the warriors of another while the lands of a kingdom only a week’s march away burned and bled in the clutches of eastern swarms.
The fools all believed the eastern emissaries that the sacking of Pargemon was merely a punitive expedition, to punish their king for interference in eastern matters. Having traveled the lands to the east herself, Rayden knew better.
The invasion of Pargemon a pretext, once a foothold had been established the might of the east would pour into the Griacan lands. Exasperated, Rayden could not get the warriors to realize their grave peril.
Only one of the men in the assemblage before her would so much as meet her eyes. A stout warrior of average height, Markos’ skill and wit had gained her respect the past few weeks.
Good-humored and spirited, Markos stood well-liked by his comrades. Rayden could also tell that none of them would hesitate for a moment to have him at their side in the most chaotic and dangerous moments of battle.
While stopping in a Thrakkian village for some food and drink, Rayden had witnessed Markos entertaining several of the children living there. Whether engaged in mock sword battles or being chased about in some children’s game, Markos displayed a gentle, kind nature with the young boys and girls that gained him even more favor with Rayden.
Eyes that could burn with a great intensity on a field of war sparkled with merriment and good humor among the little ones. Markos had even pulled Rayden into some of the mock battles, evoking laughter from her when a swarm of boisterous children armed with sticks assailed her from all sides.
Now, turning her full attention toward him, Rayden found herself wishing that he stood a king.
Markos, is there nothing that can be done to bring sense to the rulers of these lands?
Rayden asked, withholding a few more caustic remarks about the kings of the region. Besotted in wealth and power, they had been rendered blind to the starkest of threats. Is there not a way to bring Thrakkia and Samosia together, to fight the Astrians, who are burning Pargemon even now, as we speak here? If Thrakkia and Samosia meet in battle, it will only spill the blood of both, just in time for your common enemy to march upon you.
The Astrians claim they will depart, once they punish Pargemon for their interference,
Markos said. But I know you deem that to be a lie.
A naked lie,
Rayden replied, curt in tone. It is only the beginning of something far worse. You are to be just one part of the fare, for the feast of an emperor ... a tyrant whose appetite is insatiable. The other kingdoms of Griaca will be devoured along with you.
I believe you,
Markos said, looking dour.
Then how can this madness be stopped?
Rayden asked. Thrakkia and Samosia must not bleed each other!
It is possible to seek a battle of champions,
Markos suggested. But it is doubtful King Cadmenus will agree, for the Samosians have the most renowned warrior in all the Griacan Kingdoms standing with them.
Desidar ... I have heard much of this one,
Rayden said, nodding. The stories reaching her ears claimed that the Samosian warrior stood tall as a mountain and moved as quick as lightning. She doubted both attributes, but she knew that Desidar would have to be of an exceptional nature for a king to hesitate in fielding a champion to fight against him. It would be far better for all if his blade were set against the eastern hordes coming against you.
Aye, it would,
Markos replied, eyeing Rayden with a rueful expression on his face.
Rayden stared at the Thrakkian warrior for a moment. She could see the agreement with her in Markos’ eyes and face, but she knew he would fight for his king in a battle that would see no victor, no matter the outcome.
She understood his predicament. If Rayden had pledged her loyalty to a king, and given an oath, she would do the same.
"What if I can find a way to convince King Cadmenus to choose a battle of champions to resolve the quarrel with
