About this ebook

We, Indians, need to know and understand the history & achievements of one of the greatest freedom fighters the world has ever seen, Netaji Subhashchandra Bose. He has played an important and integral part in India’s freedom struggle. It is a matter of pride that this great personality’s history has been showcased into a play.

The efforts of Shri. Chennabasiahgubbi, a 95-year-old veteran of the theatre world, in researching the life & freedom struggle of Netaji, interacting with Netaji’s family and eventually conceptualizing & presenting a play on Netaji Subhashchandra Bose, deserves a big round of applause and appreciation.

Beginning from 1991, when he started the research, it took this enthusiastic art lover 10 years to screen the play in front of an audience in the year 2001. Now, it is another moment of pride when the play is being released in the form of a book in Kannada, Hindi and English languages.

In conclusion, I would like to say that, I am extremely happy to introduce Shri. Chennabasiahgubbi not only as a great actor, but also a prolific playwright too.

    ABOUT THE AUTHOR

The 95-year-old veteran, Shri. Chennabasaiahgubbi, has more than 75 years of experience and service in the field of drama. A disciple of the eminent dramatist Shri. Chitharagi Gangadhara Shastri, he has gifted many stage plays to the people of Karnataka through his drama company, Amareshwara Vijaya Nataka Mandali.  Inspired by one of the greatest freedom fighters, Netaji Subhashchandra Bose, he decided to conceive a play on this exceptional leader. With 10 years of intense research and hard work, including his meeting with Shri. Sisir Kumar Bose in Kolkata, he was finally able to stage the play in many parts of Karnataka in 2001. Now, he has given an opportunity to our publishing house to publish the same stage play in the form of a book in Kannada and English languages. We are happy and proud to publish this book. We sincerely hope that this book motivates the current and future generations to derive inspiration from Netaji and it instills love for the country.

    AUTHOR'S NOTE

At that time, I must have been around 12 or 13-years-old and the quest for freedom was at its zenith. Diverse forms of agitation like hunger strike, processions, etc. were the norm of the day. The reverberations of 'Bharat Mata Ki' would resonate everywhere. Spontaneously, I would also say 'Jai', along with others. Such was the craze and intensity. The next set of slogans that followed with great fervor was to the revered triumvirate, 'Netaji Subhashchandra Bose Ki Jai', 'Mahatma Gandhi Ki Jai' and 'Nehruji Ki Jai'.

Netaji Subhashchandra Bose and the theatre (drama) were the two elements that influenced me a lot in my childhood. I was born in pre-independent India on May 6, 1923. I still remember my childhood memories vividly. At the tender age of 9, I left my parents & hometown and travelled ticketless by train to Hubli to pursue my dream of joining theatre. In the year 2000, yet again, I got into a train, this time, with a ticket in my hand. On this occasion, my destination was Kolkata. My ambition was to prepare for an enthusiastic play. By now, I had already attained an acclaimed status as a theatre actor, director and owner of a theatre group.

As I was travelling by train, all the things that I had read & heard about Netaji Subhashchandra
