    Edgar Allan Poe was an American short story writer, poet, critic, novelist and editor. He is best known for his morbid tales of horror, many of which are now regarded as literary classics. Poe had a turbulent family background, moving often and losing both parents at a young age. He later married his landlady’s daughter, Virginia, when she was just 13, and her death nine years later profoundly affected his writing and his emotional state. Poe struggled financially throughout his life until his early death, possibly from tuberculosis exacerbated by the effects of alcohol. He popularised American Gothic horror with short stories such as The Pit and the Pendulum and is
